Well, I won the Fatty Wager, but...

I fell apart Oct - Dec and gained 6.5 pounds from my lowest. Don't know why, but that's what happened last year as well. I'll finish out the daily log below --- as self-flagellation --- but the I'm putting the bottom line on top so you don't have to scroll through the chronicle of failure.

I did not walk my most optimistic goal of 1000 miles. But I did walk 757 miles, seven miles over my stated program minimum. I lost an even 25 pounds from 251.5 to 226.5. My BF% is 27%, down from 37%.

My lowest weight was 220, then I gained some weight back Oct. -Dec, three months in which I did virtually nothing.

So here comes Oct-Dec debacle:

Tim, great work for the year! Losing weight at your advanced age is a difficult task, I can only speculate. And 757 miles for the year is about 700 more than I logged. DT

2011 workout plan

I'm fretting about it.

Walking is still the mainstay, but that 1000 mile goal last year was too much. It took up all my workout time. I think a 500 mile program minimum with a 750 top goal for this year.

With the extra time, I want to do more of workout of my own device that I only did sporadically last year. It's a freestyle combination of:

1. Heavy Hands --- shadow boxing, dancing, jumping

2. Basic body weight exercises: various forms of squats, push-ups, and ab work.

3. Cool down with YRG exercises that make my back feel good.

4. This is all done non-stop with heart rate varying from near max to as low as 70%.

I have also been in the basement looking at my dusty weight weight bench and dumbbells. Maybe, later in the year, I'll get into some very light lifting.

Those are my thoughts for now. I'll run this system for a few months and see how I feel. I am open to suggestions.

224.5 down two pounds, BF% still 29.5 (varies but that's the average)

Reversed the weight gain over the last three months. Loss should go faster in February.

January stats:
Miles walked: 60.7 miles
Days walked: 22 out of 31

HH&BWE (my Heavy Hands/Bodyweight non-stop high-heart rate program)
worked out 11 out of 31 days
total workout time: 4 hours 35 minutes 30 seconds.

All pretty much on schedule.

February Totals:
Weight: 220.
BF%: 27.41 (month average)
Miles walked: 78.6. (139.3 for the year)
Strength (HH&BWE) 8 sessions, 25 minutes per session.

This month's excuse: I lost about a week when I totaled my car.

I love how you have reinvented yourself. Barracuda just has a bit more of an edge than Seawhale. :)

And, seriously, I hope you are okay from the car acrobatics. That's no good for the spine, much less anything else.

March totals. Gained 4.5 pounds. Now at 224.5. It's probably a broken scale, yeah, that's it, a broken scale.

Let's take a look at the numbers for March. Maybe they'll give us an idea of what happened:

Miles walked: 17.77. (As opposed nearly 80 in Feb.)

HH&BWE sessions: 0. Zeero. NADA. Nothing.

Wow, how does a guy interpret that?

The Barracuda has spent the last two months in the Slough of Despond. Gained 2 more pounds. 226.5 for a loss of zero for the year.

Walked 6.25 miles total. That's 163 for the year.

On the good side, I can see my way out of the darkness.

May stats:
20 miles walked. 7 pounds gained.

June stats
71 miles walked. 8 pounds lost.

254 miles walked in half a year.

Pretty obviously, I need to keep to a pace more like June than May. Goal of 350 miles for the last half of the year.

July = 96 miles walked (349 for the year).

Lost half a pound, which is pretty good for me since July is a month of near continous BBQs and dinner parties here.

This looks solid. Especially the HH/BW program. Interested to see what this looks like.

Mick,
The heavy hands/body weight program is something I made up and actually enjoy doing, so I should be able to keep at it. It seems suitable for an old fart who wants to maintain some muscle and endurance. (I've been doing this the last 3 years but somehow stopped last March when I was going through a bit of depression for what now seems like a very stupid reason.)

It's a freestyle combination of:

1. Heavy Hands while shadow boxing, dancing, jumping, walking the treadmill, walking the stairs.

2. Basic body weight exercises: various forms of squats, push-ups, and ab work.

This is all done non-stop with heart rate varying from near max to as low as 70% of max.

In practice, it would look like this: half mile on the treadmill at 3.5 mph using a pair of 3 lb weights lifted above head with each step. Followed by a 2 sets of body weight exercises: 15 push ups, 30 air squats, 30 crunches. Followed by a heavy hands session of shadow boxing, dancing, jumping, stair climbing. Another couple of sets of BWE. Cool down with a few YRG poses that feel good on my back. As time goes by, I want to increase BWE numbers and will add some, like dips and pull-ups and lunges.

I average 25 minutes on this and sometimes go as long as 45 minutes (but then I'm beat the rest of the day).

I have also been in the basement looking at my dusty weight weight bench and dumbbells. Maybe, later in the year, I'll get into some very light lifting. But I doubt it.

And, oh yeah, the walking I do is racewalk style. That means the foot must land on the heel and roll through the step. What happens is that the muscles that raise the forefoot, whatever they are, those ones on the front of the leg just above the foot? Those suckers hurt after a just half a mile. So in the freestyle portion of my HH/BW program, I spend some time trying to walk on my heels, which sets those same muscles on fire. I'm hoping I'm strengthening those muscles which will improve my walking times.

Suggestions are welcomed.

Tim - I applaud your walking and I think it's great for overall health. But not so much for weight loss, as your (and almost everyone's) experience shows. Probably because you don't have the energy/hours in the day to get the desired effect.

Johno,
Of coarse you are correct. Diet is major.

Though I must admit, I didn't push as hard on the walking as I did last year, when I lost 25 pounds. It seems you need to do more than just put in the miles. I need to push harder. You can actually get your heart rate up very high walking. For instance, try to walk a measured mile in under 12 minutes. My guess: you'll be gassed.

I hear you. I'm alternating running & roadmarching (w/ wgt'd vest) for the first part of this year. But not to lose weight, just to improve cardio for grappling.

To lose my ten holiday indulgence pounds, it's the Ferriss Slow Carb plan. Healthy & no-fuss. And none of the energy problems of an Atkins type low carb diet.
