It has been brought to my attention that even though I put in 764 miles of walking last year, I'm still fucking fat and that I ought to think about "diet." To that end I have been logging my food since Jan. 8.

Trying to keep it to 2000 calories a day. But I get to add the calories I burned in exercise (which I also have to log). So today, for instance, I can eat about 2500 cals.

Monthly check in:
logged 115 walking miles
3804 feet of elevation (only started working elevation Jan 22).
3 hours 20 minutes of my Heavy Hands/bodyweight program (HH+BW) in 7 sessions

Weight averaged 223 for the month, ended at 219
Body Fat averaged 29% for the month, ended at 26%

I may cut down or eliminate the HH+BW part to concentrate more on altitude to be in better shape for Everest Base Camp in October.

Next month's plan:
1. lay down a lot of miles and work on speed two days a week.
2. Pick up as much altitude as possible. At least 10,000 feet.
3. Hiking trip to Death Valley.

Keep my calories under 2100 and shoot for a weight of 215.

Feb. 12

Weight 216

55 miles walked for the month. (Average @4.5/day)

175 miles for the year, about 20 days ahead of the 1000 mile year that is my goal.

@5500 feet in total altitude for the month. @460 feet/day.

Diet: @1700 total calories/day average for the month.

I'm going to get lit up at this rate. 1700 calories is low.

I've been logging my food since Jan. 8. 1700 is indeed low. I'm losing very fast, which is what I want for now. I'll probably bump up the cals next month.

FEB 18:
Weekly check-in

Walked 28 miles this week, with some altitude work (2400 feet). Speed work hindered by snow.

Diet: average 1789 calories/day for the week.

Weight: 213

Today, I go to Death Valley for a week. There'll be several driving driving days there and back. I doubt if my companion will want to hike all the miles I want to put in. Plus, we'll probably eat more. Romantic dinners and all. I don't see this as a weight loss week and will be happy if I can just keep it at 213.

Realistically, I'll probably gain two pounds back.

Feb. 26

weight 211.5

walked 20 miles, 1900, elevation 1190

calories/day average 2080

Went to Death Valley. Walked while there, but 3 full days are driving days. Also ate dinner in a good restaurant 3 nights in a row.

February: weight 211 (loss of 8 pounds)
Miles walked: 129
Altitude gained: 9800 feet
Walk workouts: 26 of 29 days.

Fell short of my altitude goal by 200 feet. Not bad.

Way ahead of my 1000 mile/year pace (About 20 days).

Lost 8 pounds. Logging my food and mostly keeping my calories around 2000/day.

Next month's plan:

100 miles.
15,000 feet altitude.
Use trekking poles on the altitude hikes.
Keep daily calories at about 2100.
Shoot for weight loss of 5-6 pounds.

I don't know if your aware of it or not, but using trekking poles can increase energy expenditure by up to 30%. Once again my taxpayer funded education comes in handy.

Thanks. Yes, I am aware of that. And here's the cool thing: an increase of energy expenditure WITH NO INCREASE IN PERCEIVED EXERTION.

The study was done by the Cooper Institute. Pretty reputable.

Very impressive results so far.

Don't answer this if you don't want to, but do you think the original bulking up had any cause/effect relationship to your travel/adventure writing? (I still think "Jaguars Ripped My Flesh" and "Pecked To Death By Ducks" are classics of the form, BTW).

Week ending March 11

Walked 25.25 miles
elevation gained: 1536
Average calorie/day: 2265
Weight: 209

Need to jack up the elevation to meet this month's goal of 15,000. Weight loss seems stalled at 209. I'll cut back a bit next week.

Thanks for the kind words, ABW.

The bulking up (getting fat) had more to do with drinking and eating all I wanted than with any aspect of my job. There were times when it was wise for me to lose 25 or 30 pounds before an expedition. Back in the day, I never had much problem with this. Now, semi-retired from the insane stuff, it's harder to get back into shape since I don't have a defined goal.

Miles walked: 25.25 miles (starting some speed intervals)

Keep total miles about the same

I like how you track avg cal's/wk, very smart way of doing it. Congratulations on the weight loss, and you must be seeing a lot of beautiful scenery in the process, keep it up!

As it happens, the program I use only reports for a week, so I post here on Sunday.

Week ending March 25
weight: 206.2
Miles walked: 23.5
Elevation gained: 1650 feet
calories/day: 2690

I need to cut back the calories next week. I'd like to finish the month at 205.

March numbers: 110 miles walked, 7000 feet of elevation gained, 5 pounds lost.

For the week ending April 1: 17 miles walked, 1600 feet of altitude gained. average calories/day = 2373.

My weight has been stuck at 206 for a week.

Goals for next week: 15 miles walking, 1500 feet of altitude, under 2000 cals/day.

I have a bunch of work and it will be difficult to get in as many miles as I want. Consequently, I'll cut down the calories this week.

week ending April 8:
weight 208, up two pounds.
Average calories/day 2945
Miles walked 17.5
Elevation gained 1600 feet

This week's lesson is pretty ez to see: nearly 3000 calories a day is too much. Next week's plan: keep daily calories at 2000. At least 20 miles walking. At least 2000 feet gained.

Oh oh.

Week ending April 15.

Weight 211 (gained 3 pounds)
Average calories/day: 2600. (But there was one day I pigged out on 4900 cals, another day I ate 3600. Clearly big pig days followed by near fasting days are not working for me.)

13.9 miles walked
1500 feet of elevation gained.

Next week's plan: keep calories at 1700 average. No day over 2000 cals.
Up mileage to 20.
Up elevation to 2500 feet.
Lose 3 pounds, goddamnit.

Week ending April 22:

Lost two pounds: 209
Met all goals for the week
average calories/day 1682
Miles walked 28.35
Elevation gained 2140 feet

Next week, same plan: 20 miles walking, 2000 feet elevation gain, 1700 cals/day.

I want to lose 3 pounds by April 30 so I don't have to report a gain in the Fatty Wager. Really.

May 1
weight: 208 (gained two pounds this month)
because
My daily calories averaged 2789 per day. @700 cals/day over my goal.

Miles walked 94.
Elevation gain: 7500
Year to date miles: 450 (way ahead of mile 1000 mile/year goal.)
Elevation, year to date: 28,200 feet

This is pretty clear: even though I put in a lot of miles and elevation, the overeating put me up two pounds. No way around it.

Battle plan for next month: calories to average 2000/day.
100 miles walking
10,000 feet elevation.

That should put me around 204 or less.

OK. Lost 3 pounds this week. 205. Let's analyze:

I had to speak in Boise, an eight hour drive. So I didn't do my walk on two days, and only did a short one on one day.

15.5 miles total for week.
500 feet of gained elevation

Lowest mileage and elevation of the year.

BUT: I ate an average of 1350 calories/day.

So I lost three pounds.

It hardly gets any more clear than that.
