2013.11.16AM; jiu-jitsu…took my son to jiu-jitsu in the morning where we worked sprawls and sit-outs off the double leg. After class he was awarded his first stripe :). At first he was all shy about it, but that wore off quickly and then he feel like a li'l badass.

Spent the rest of the day at a lū'au for my best man and his new German bride, visiting from Northern Ireland. We had a whole pig, several fish, a turkey, and some chickens in the imu kālua (underground oven). I don't know how much I ate or drank--it was a lot--but the rest of the time was spent between the pool and the hot tub.

2013.11.20PM; jiu-jitsu...did ukemi for half an hour, which I have been neglecting, then sparred for half an hour with a blue belt preparing for the NAGA tournament this weekend.

After that an hour of drilling standing grip fighting to some nice double legs and ankle picks, including the Guilhermo Mendes guard pull to ankle pick.

2013.11.21PM; no-gi jiu-jitsu...rolled with the advanced bantam Triple Crown champion. He's got a superb guard, but of course was giving up a bunch of weight and experience to me, so I kept the pressure on and eventually forced my way through. I ended up winning all four rounds: Billy Robinson head wrap, steamroller kesa-gatame, footlock, and a toehold. Nonetheless, I came away with a lot of respect for his guard as it is no joke.

Finished up with a half an hour of fencing with my son: longsword versus sword and buckler in the dwindling evening light.

2013.11.23PM; taught the kids jiu-jitsu in the morning, and did some light sparring, then this...16/40.

3. Dead Lift x 4, 3, 2, 1 (255, 275, 300, 315 lbs.)
4. Strict Barbell Curl 3 x 10 @ 80 lbs.
5. One Arm KB Row 3 x 10 @ 36 lbs.

I finally got a couple of 45-pound plates, so now I can go above 300 on my dead lift.

2013.11.24AM; went on a 5 mile hike on the Mānoa Cliffs-Puʻu ʻŌhiʻa trails, then some swordplay in the afternoon with my son: longsword vs. espada y daga. For a six year old, he can check a sword-stroke and counter cut at the lead hand like a pro.

2013.12.03PM; jiu-jitsu...rolled for a while as a warm up, just playing "catch and release" from open guard. After that, class was an hour of mount and S-mount attacks. Finished up with additional 6 minute rounds, medium intensity, maintaining nasal breathing always.

I always observe the connection between nasal breathing and clarity of thought; once you start breathing through your mouth the body begins to tighten up and creative thought fades away.

2013.12.5PM;...18/40. I missed the last rep at 155 so I gotta back up a bit, I think. The press is a fucking hard thing to do well, it seems to me to be the ultimate CNS exercise, requiring concentrated coordination of so many muscles. I have actually been reading a lot of Maxick materials, particularly his book on barbell training, Great Strength Through Muscle Control, published in 1913. I am trying to teach myself to fire all the muscles with correct intensity and sequence.

Hi Tom, thanks for the link. Jason seems like a very good guy, but I tend to have philosophical differences when it comes to training. Furthermore, I don't actually lift weights "for bjj". I do it as an aside, just because I like it, and it breaks up the monotony of training Jiu-Jitsu every day. My goal is a body weight clean and press (~220 lbs.).
