Old Man Supplementing
Old Man Supplementing
After a painful & limiting glute strain (maybe from over-drilling Double Leg takedowns, maybe from getting taken down by a tough 20 year old), I started having annoying muscle cramps/spasms/tightness, especially at bedtime. Coincidentally, I was right at the spot in a nutrition book (Phinney & Volek) that recommended magnesium tablets for night time muscle cramps.
So, in combo with acupuncture & stretching & targeted glute exercises, I started a 3 tab a day routine of Slow Mag (magnesium chloride, slow release) for one month. Slowly, my symptoms decreased, then disappeared. Now I'm down to 1 tab per day...we'll see if this is sufficient to maintain.
I humbly submit my experience as one potential pellet for your Shotgun Approach.
*****
The only other supplements I take: daily Fish Oil and psyllium, and a weekly swack of Vit D.

Your strain was from something acute. It resolved over the next month. Did magnesium have anything to do with it?
"Know that! & Know it deep you fucking loser!"

Re: Old Man Supplementing
Vitamin D, Fish Oil, Magnesium are kind of like the standards. Only thing I take extra is Tart Cherry Capsules. Nice hint from Shaf and did the research. Seems to help with DOMS, etc.

I think the magnesium helped. I'll run a few years of randomized, double-blind studies and get back to you.

Re: Old Man Supplementing
Mag/Cal I think has a mountain of research supporting it. When I remember to take mine, I notice a lot less hyper-tonicity in my neck and back. Even if it didn't directly work on healing the injury, getting everything else to let go is a huge benefit to overall pain levels.johno wrote:Life is a mystery, my son.TerryB wrote:Your strain was from something acute. What are the well absorbed forms of the cal mag? Thanks
Re: Old Man Supplementing
Slow-Mag, the brand that was recommended, and that I used, uses Magnesium Chloride and Calcium Carbonate.

Vit D
Fish oil/krill oil
Magnesium citrate fizzy (Vitacost's Natural Calm knock off)
Psyllium seed...I keep coming back to Metamucil and it's knock offs because the bigger flake psyllium doesn't mix as well
Zinc
Nothing I've found is magical.
There's a decent case to be made for a baby asprin a day

Oh, wait, I did find that berberine knocked my blood sugar down like crazy...like from 80s to 60s...this is pretty brand specific though, I had a bottle from Amazon that didn't do shit, so I recommend Leaner Living's Glycosolve berberine formula

I've gone back & forth on baby aspirin, but I've noticed that I bleed like crazy when on it - the slightest scrape in grappling often wouldn't stop, ending the session. So when I was working as a fire fighter, thinking trauma was a significant risk to me, I quit the aspirin.Shafpocalypse Now wrote: There's a decent case to be made for a baby asprin a day
Now retired, might go back on it.

Gut health has become a big deal for me lately. Used to think it was kind of quackery but shit...turns out that happier gut does equal happier brain for me. So, bone broth/gelatin and a quality probiotic.
In the mill, getting down.

Mos definitely stay away form Pentosan then.

Vitamin D and a quality probiotic. Could be coincidental but I haven't been sick in a couple of years since making vitamin d and probiotics a regular thing.

I keep losing pentosan sources. I'd run another cycle for sure, it's been damn near since 2000.

RE: Probiotics. Having colitis, I can say that chugging some good quality Kefir everyday makes a big difference. Good Kefir is cheaper than a quality probiotic pill, too.

Re: Old Man Supplementing
The key phrase is 'chugging'....don't sip it like a good Bourbon. I honestly could give two shits about organic this or that, but my wife is all about organic stuff, much to the dismay of my checkcard, so she buys me all this Kefir stuff. Wallaby is the one in my fridge now. The one prior to that was some Greek yogurt kefir. Go to the refrigerated area of your supermarket in the crunchy section and you'll see a brand or three.buckethead wrote:Is there any brand/flavor of kefir that doesn't make you want to vomitThe Venerable Bogatir X wrote:RE: Probiotics. I was taking the liquid stuff by BIO-K but it just wasn't cost effective.Mickey O'neil wrote:Koko and Croatoa, what probiotic are y'all using?
Now I'm taking this stuff.

Re: Old Man Supplementing
Old man supps should probably include prostate health. Life Extension Ultra Natural Prostate was the one a complementary dr recommended to me.
