Although this is about mountain biking, this attitude 100% carries over to surfing…and a host of other stuff (I got it from a rock climber friend). I believe if I had this attitude when training Jiu-Jitsu, I’d still be doing it (being hyper-competitive doesn’t make as many friends on the mat).

That’s a good reminder of shit I already knew, but don’t seem to internalize.

Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People” really emphasizes the idea of lavish praise.  I’m convinced it does as much for the generator as the receiver.  Good vid of  how things should be, would only be better if it were shown in terms of competition – i.e. congratulating your competitors on their achievements, cheering them on, and earnestly wishing them the best.  My best competitive outcomes have come from this state of mind, but it’s still not second nature…

This type of shit translates to everything.

Joy is infectious.  One of my key “leadership” things – both teaching, admin…family…everything…is BE HAPPY for other people.  Be happy for what happens to them.  Be happy when they do things well. Cheer them on.  Bring them your joy. Have fun.  Life is too short for dreary bullshit.

When I am on point and do this, good things always happen and great things happen a lot more often.

When I coached basketball at the middle school level (and I was NOT a great coach in most ways) I had three things –

1. Score as many points as we can as fast as we can.
2. Be happy when we score.
3. Who cares – be happy when the other team scores too.

I was the modern NBA before it happened.

Look – we never won the championship.  I don’t think we ever won more games than we lost.  But at tournaments you would have scores of 19 to 24…..and then we would play and it would be us losing 45 to 58.  But after the game everyone was coming up to us, the other teams, talking about how much fun that was.

I still get kids from my team well over a decade later coming up to me talking about how much fun they had.

Joy.  Enjoy what you are doing.  Enjoy what other people are doing.

If you want to be loved and valued by people, be a resource to them.  This applies to positive energy and everything else.  It acknowledges the transactional basis for human interactions and relationships, all while elevating them and placing you in the locus of control.

Glad you enjoyed the video!

I’ve found that if people are giving me a bad attitude in the water, the best thing I can do is genuinely cheer for them.  Something like, “Ohhh, that was a sick wave!” I’ve made friends out of enemies this way, and made friends out of strangers.

Lastly, my goal for the month of August has been to not complain.  That’s translated to a better overall attitude and what feels like a performance boost vs. getting caught up in negative self-talk.
