    • LFs kid is into gaming/streaming on twitch.  They are running on an older machine (2017).  Looking to get them an upgrade gaming laptop as a graduation present to take to college.

Mainly gaming minecraft and streaming onto twitch.   Ironically the kid is not particularly tech savvy so I’ve been recruited as the lead for this whole project.

Ideally I’d like to get them a laptop that can handle the game and the stream, but I’m open to doing the whole dual PC set up using the older laptop.  Desktop isn’t really an option because of travel to and from university that’s coming up.

      Any ideas people?

I really don’t want to turn to reddit for this.

And I REALLY don’t want to drop more than 1500.

If he needs a laptop for college, I’d go with an Intel I9 or AMD Ryzen equivalent, so something in the high 7 series (I think) and something like a 2080 super for the GPU.

I’m not sure if the laptop would still have enough power to handle the streaming and gaming without a slowdown or frame drop. I have a 1660ti, AMD 5 3600x, and I can stream graphics intensive games at 144+ frames per second.

I don’t though, because I kept getting called faggot and nigger over voice chat.

Oh, and at least a 120hz monitor, with 144hz better. I don’t know if a 240hz monitor is available on any laptops.

I don’t know if it’ll matter if he’s just streaming mincraft, but if he gets into other games, it’s best to have a little wiggle room.

And a dual monitor setup for chat is much better, but he can use a tablet if he has one, or even his phone, but it won’t be very fun on the phone.

      Awesome.  Thank you.

There is a legion 5 with an 10th generation i7  at costco for a pretty decent price.  It does have a 1TB hard drive, which I kind of like for the kid.

I’ll start seeing if I can find something with a stronger processor.

I was looking at the current laptop last night.  The c drive was out of space.  I haven’t done any PC work in years.  It’s been all mac and chromebooks.  Took me forever to just figure out how windows 10 works.

This is kid is not going hardcore gaming.  It’s all minecraft and talking to some british kids and indie games.

It all started during the pandemic as a hobby to pass time.  And now the kid has a following and there is actual money being made from this stream.  Nothing that is going to keep them from going to college, but I didn’t make a dime playing games on the PS4 during the pandemic. So they are one up on me.

Edit – man.  The i9 definitely drives that price up.  If this was for me, I’d say no problem.  But the kid needs to spend time studying and out enjoying college, not twitching.  And i7  sounds right.

I swear I’ve tried to post twice and don’t know what happened.

Either way, if he’s really just into Minecraft he should be set with the i7 and 1660ti in that laptop. He can use the other laptop to monitor and engage with his Twitch chat.

Semi-related, but it doesn’t appear to be cheaper to build your own rig at the moment. The retail market for GPUs is so inflated by supply bottlenecks (I think), tariffs (probably, still) and the odd idea to jack up the prices of older cards when new ones were released a few months back that you can get something comparable from a prebuilt place like Apex Gaming or any of the Lenovo, Asus, Acer etc type brands.

Found an Asus 14 inch, which is a bit small…

      BUT

      AMD Ryzen 9 5000 series
      Nvidia RTX 3060
      16g RAM
      1T storage
      144hz screen

For about 1500.  A little more than the other one I found, but it seems like these are stronger components.  Thinking of pulling the trigger.

I’d do it. The RAM is a touch low, but I don’t think Mincraft is a big resource hog, and if it has any sort of upgrade path then he may be able to drop another 16 GB in it and be pretty well set for whatever he needs or wants to do.
