Hey awesome, you’re gonna have a great time!  Check out Koke’e, there’s some great hikes like Awa’awa’puhi Trail up there, and Waimea Canyon if you can, there’s a reason why they call it the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.  Other than that just explore and have a good time.  The north shore is great, have lunch up in Hanalei (and a tiki drink at Tahiti Nui there) and hit Hanalei Bay, which is beautiful.  Also, I’m not sure if they have restarted it, but Friday nights in Hanapēpē is Art Night starting at 6:00 p.m. and they close main street and have a little street fair that’s fun.  You can walk around and get dinner.

As far as advice, don’t leave valuables in your car!  Haha (no really).  That and talk to the local people at your hotel if you can, or at various places you visit.  Ask them what are the little things you can do as a tourist to get by better.  For example, wear masks in shops and restaurant.  It’s stupid, but on vacation is not the place to take some kind of stand.  These little things that show respect for locals go a long way.

Also, don’t touch endangered species!  It’s been all over the headlines here but people have been posting videos of themselves touching native seals and sea turtles, which is both stupid and illegal.  Enjoy seeing them, but don’t get too close.

Last thing, if you get stuck on Oahu at all, hit me up via PM and I will take care.

Thanks.  We are flying from SF to Kauai, so no Oahu.

Will check out that stuff.  Looking forward to it, it’s my first trip there.

This trip was a study in contrasts.

On one hand, Kauai and I imagine the other Hawaiian islands, are beautiful beyond belief.  We stayed in Princeville, by Hanelei, and could only go north a few times a day due to a mud slide that fucked up the road.

On the other hand, holy fucking shit are there are ton of tourists there.  I felt bad for people who actually lived there having to deal with the tourists.  And it’s expensive.  However, the people who lived there, in general, were super cool.  All of the native Hawaiians I met were awesome.

We snorkeled at a nearby beach in Princeville, called Hideaway Beach.  It was phenomenal.  I found myself swiming along with 5 sea turtles at one time.  They are just chill and don’t care if you are close, although if you get too close they will slide away from you.

On another beach, two Monk seals were just sleeping.  It was super cool to see.  They weigh about 300-400 lbs.

Helicopter ride took us over some amazing scenery.

It rained a lot. Hiking was muddy and was a bit more arduous than I had prepared for.

Also, if you are a tourist woman, no need to bring a bra.  18 year olds on up to grannies apparently take them off when they hit the island and just let ’em swing.

Sigh.  Yeah.  I hope you had a good time, though.  It sounds like it.
