    • “Last week I had a call with one of my athletes to write a new training block. As we reviewed his training log, a pattern became obvious.

All of his best deadlift blocks included a hefty portion of upper back work; Rows of various types and pull-ups. The blocks that showed the biggest improvement contained these movements. Blocks that didn’t contain these movements consistently showed less improvement.

This came as a surprise to both him and me. “

Rows are not critically important. Unless… – email newsletter

World class lifter and coach Mike Tuscherer.

RTS has had this strained relationship with assistance work and emphasis sports specificity (fair). It surprises me that lots of these sorts of contemporary coaches will not generalise anything unless they see it in their data. Nevermind the elites of generations past; what would they have known.

      Yeah.  I saw that email.

But did you see the conclusion he drew from it?  Something like “I’m not suggesting that heavy rows will improve your deadlift, but that you have to find things that work.”

      No fucking shit.

But maybe one of the ways to find things that work is to do things that have worked for a lot of people.  And a lot of people have suggested that doing heavy upper back work will help the deadlift.

LMAO the absolute state of strempf coaching in America.  You would think that his interactions with Sheyko would have taught him something useful, or at least to shut his mouth and not admit to being a know-nothing.

I did go back and read it because I couldn’t be sure it was so stupid for him. Strange.

Yeah did he keep the Sheiko stuff at an arm’s distance? Ed Coan periodised bent over rows and shoulder presses. Success leaves clues? Nup.

One thing that echoes from Bob Wanamaker (RIP) is how he trained with Mike T. and suggested he start finding alternative ways to train or he’d get injured. Sure enough he ran himself out of the sport, now does a lot of the other stuff (front squats, pull ups) he dismissed for years and has become an advocate for them.

God, that’s weird. I guess that’s what happens when you’re naturally gifted… Upper back work helps the deadlift? SHOCKING!

There is this elitism that’s emerging that Tuscherer isn’t necessarily a part of – but his RPE fanatics are definitely supporting.

Anyone who questions RPE is someone ignoring science etc. etc. (hilarious how this extrapolates out to other global issues).
