Well, that's a good point. Re: America, please explain.....
I can't understand why anyone ever complains about immigrants from Latin America. They are hard working people, devoted to family, mostly catholic, and culturally not any different from us. Or maybe for some of you rednecks, the problem is really Catholicism.
I work with a bunch of immigrants, from a variety of places. In fact, I'm one of the only native-born white boys on a staff of about 120. I fucking love immigrants.
Now, when I see a broad in a burqa, of course that shit pisses me off. OTOH, a Bosnian Muslim talked to me for five minutes about how much he loves America and appreciates all the ways he's benefitted from living here, and I'll tell you that if Kaz was there to hear it, he would have put his arm around the guy and sang "God Bless America."
Someone made the point about assimilation, and that's the key. People who leave third world shitholes to live here need to ignore the idea of multiculturalism, drop the burqa, raise a few stand up comics who specialize in sending up the prophet, and keep opening up restaurants.
We should keep out the criminals, the insane and the jihadis. Let the rest in, as long as they blend in.
And teach every child in America Spanish beginning at the age of eight. Let them pick a third language in high school.

Pretty much agree with everything you said GBM, but teaching children Spanish in public schools is a waste of time. It's not going to help kids when they enter the job market even if jobs require Spanish because there's no way you can compete with native speakers. And there are a lot of native Spanish speakers in the US.

Regarding assimilation, I believe that a lot of you have blurred recollections of how folks assimilated in the past. Immigrants would generally cluster in neighborhoods of people of similar backgrounds and work providing goods and services in their neighborhood. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that but people usually don't melt into the pot for an entire generation.
If assimilation mattered, that guy who came to the US when he was a teenager and then stayed through university and grad school wouldn't have a year to pack his bags and get out while anybody who promised $500,000 to their US Embassy is handed a visa.
Some countries have package tours to the US in order to have a baby and return home when the passport is processed. That kid's future spouse, kids and parents are all entitled to US citizenship as well whenever they want to claim it for whatever particular reason.

Re: America, please explain.....
We had the options of Spanish or Chinese immersion in our kid's school and opted for good old English. I grew-up in a largely hispanic neighborhood back in the day and see zero need for the kids to be 'immersed' in a language other than English when kids (and their teachers) are challenged enough with matters such as basic civics and geography. Now this same school is also teaching the basics of coding (computer programming) to third grade and up, and my daughter is a third grader, we were all over that. She does take Spanish 2x per week part of the year, but as an extra. Now this school is wonderbread, whole milk, lilly white, but the few Asians and Indians they have, all seem to be in the 'regular' English program.
I don't think English as a primary language for Americans is unreasonable, regardless of today's immigration landscape.

Re: America, please explain.....
You're the expert on IT personnel. I based my comments on articles i've read about American workers being called upon to train their H1B replacements such as here. Have also read many times that we have a shortage of American STEM workers, which apparently isn't true. Whether we have the right mix of needed STEM workers isn't something I'd considered enough. The Venerable Bogatir X wrote:I'm hardly 'touchy feely' by anyone's standards, but you're off on this one, Donk.DrDonkeyLove wrote:[
First, I'm a big supporter of legal immigration from all over the world but oppose the open borders crowd. Also, I agree 100% about the employers. Our touchy feely tech overlords have tons of STEM trained Americans to meet their employment needs but they are trying to drastically expand H-1B visas to lower personnel costs which is simply a modern robber baron move at the expense of Americans.
You show me where we have trained Americans in IT who are sitting at home due to H1B visa holders taking their jobs. They do not exist. H1B's aren't taking your vanilla network admin/help desk spots; they're software developers, database developers/admins, and the like. Also, in my experience, H1's who work towards being I-140 approved and ultimately get their EAD/Green Card work the American dream far better and harder than most Americans ever imagine doing. They tend to get fairly Americanized in the sense that they never force feed their ways on anyone (I've eaten more than a few bacon cheeseburgers having lunch with Indians), they buy homes in good school districts, pay taxes and all that jazz. The cost for an employer to hold an H1B visa and then go through the hoops of GC processing is in the vicinity of $25k-$30k spread out over a couple of years, so it's not exactly a bargain. Now utilizing H1's for staff augmentation is another matter, but still, we do not have enough qualified Americans to fill those jobs....not even close.
Culture rules IMO and I agree w/comments here that demographics is destiny. But what is American culture right now? If I were to distill it down to its essence, it would be: come here legally, learn the language, work hard, stay off the gov't tit, and buy into our pluralistic society.

Re: America, please explain.....
That article describes an outsourcing scenario which typically involves onshore/offshore models that allegedly drastically cut IT costs to big enterprise IT shops. It seems to go in cycles. H1B's are not taking their jobs, per se, the deliverables of the FTE being managed by a big third party. Accenture, Cognizant, Tata, Infosys are the big players and their are oodles of smaller shops doing managed teams and SOW work that also utilize H1's.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying there is a "need" for immersion, and I agree that English is, and should be, primary. I just think it's sad that as Americans, we don't typically learn languages.
I work with a handful of Dominicans in their 30s and even 20s, born here to immigrant parents, who barely speak any more Spanish than I do. I believe there is a value in learning, and more utility to Spanish than anything else. Let them learn another language in high school.
That's great about the coding, though. And I admit, it's of much greater utility than a foreign language when we already speak the dominant language in the world.

My brother married a Dominican girl and my three nephews look more 'ethnic' than DeBlasio's kid in terms of skin tone, but with no 'fro. They are growing-up, upper middleclass young Jersey boys all the way, but they're also bilingual as most of the family on her side is still Washington Heights.

My bro planned for this and gave the kids cracker first names instead of Miguel, Pedro, ect. Works better on the hockey rink for them, anyway.

The place where Kaz's analysis drops off is the in general, hard working family oriented immigrants from S and Central America....I'm virulently anti-papist but having a common religious tradition and a zeal for making that money does make for an easier transition. Other than not learning English I have no quarrel with most of these folks. I don;t see many of them scamming the system where I live. Perforated border states are a little different I'm sure.

Do we have any American Indians on igx? I would enjoy reading their perspective on assimilation, English as a national language, religion, etc etc.
