One of the original doctors died from it. He was only 34 years old, not some geezer with a bunch of preexisting conditions.

Re: Wu Flu
The CCP says there are 700,000 cases of regular flu there annually. The US CDC says the US has approximately 15,000,000 cases. So China only has 5% of the cases with a population that's 400%+ bigger. Deaths due to flu according to the CCP are less than 200 annually. CDC cites flu deaths in the US as 10,000. Extrapolating the data says the CCP claims 98% less cases of the flu than actual.

Re: Wu Flu
According to one of my friends, who came from Guandong, Chinese people have been eating exotic meats for "thousands of years". Just wonder how many could afford to do it before the Deng reforms?
More Chinese can afford to eat such odd meat. More such "wet" markets. You get these animals living close together. One gets sick. You get a rare infection in another animal.
The odds stack up as more Chinese eat meat from more such places.

William Patrick worked at Ft. Detrick. He said that they talked of using "less lethal agents" for war. Tied up medical resources. They were going to use them on the Cubans. Never happened.

China is trying to join the countries that can do research on bugs like Ebola, with max security labs, so they haven’t been hiding the Wuhan lab.

While it’s true that China is making legitimate advances in virology it lacks the barrier between medical and military domains you have elsewhere or a leadership with an ethical compass to guide them responsibly.

Does this satellite image show the scale of China's coronavirus cremations? Sulphur dioxide emissions which are produced when bodies are burned reach alarming levels in Wuhan

South China Morning Post:
“Just a very rough estimate, 100 nurses and doctors can look after 100 ordinary beds and 16 ICU beds. If they are sick, not only do they occupy 100 beds, but the staff taking care of 100 beds are gone. That means a hospital loses the capacity of 200 beds.”
“That is why the authorities have to keep sending medics over to Wuhan, not only because there are not enough beds, but because of a lack of health doctors and nurses to take care of the sick beds.”

- At least 500 Wuhan medical staff infected with coronavirus
- Medical sources in the city confirm rate of infection, but say they have been told not to release the full picture to the public
- So far three deaths among medical workers have been confirmed, including that of Li Wenliang, but higher rate of infection risks hampering fight to curb disease

No bueno. Very high R0, between 4.7-6.6 which means that for every one person infected, on average up to 6.6 additional people will be infected. For reference:
Hepatitis C: 2
Ebola: 2
HIV: 4
SARS: 4
Mumps: 10
Measles: 18

TLDR: Deaths heavily concentrated among the old and sick; China's draconian quarantine measures have likely been effective.

Re: Wu Flu
COVID19 has some tricky properties
- doesn't kill everyone, so lots of carriers
- it does kill more than regular flu, so it sucks
- Some people can carry and barely be sick, so not suspected
- transmitted a bunch of ways
- Appears that some people can be reinfected or carry it dormant
A 2% mortality rate, that was the same rate for being a one-time space shuttle passenger (2 crashes in 100 flights).

Iran's top guy is on it now.
A local cleric from the Iranian city of Qom has suggested a novel cure for the new coronavirus - the pre-bedtime rectal administration of violet leaf oil: "Before bedtime, drench some cotton in violet oil and apply onto your anus"

Characteristics of and Important Lessons From the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Outbreak in China
Summary of a Report of 72 314 Cases From the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention
Check the name of the author, I reckon JAMA folk lurk on Irongarmx.
Mortality among confirmed cases 2.3%. 1.4% total. It is still quite hard to estimate true mortality as we don't know true denominator. I am guessing the majority of patients are invisible to the health system. In general not many people go to a GP for a flu. Fear of isolation his another probable factor for hiding the symptoms.
The trouble is not the virus, but the perception and the government reactions. Because of travel restrictions many workers cannot return to their factories after Christmas holidays, and so factories operate at reduced capacity. Potentially it can tip the economy of the whole world. This sentiment is reflected in the markets around the world. Technically Dow Jones has broken through the previous low at 28,250 and is now headed towards 26,200 which seems to be a support level estimated from the previous move. If it breaks through that there is a lot of downside potential.

No matter how good of a job the Chinese have done, the Iranians appear to be screwing it up. In Qom, a place people travel from all over to visit...
Each tear, according to one tradition, will be transformed in the afterlife into a pearl, and an angel will compensate them for their tears with a bucket of pearls that will be signs of their devotion when they arrive at the gate of paradise. But for now the bodily fluids are flowing, wiped away occasionally by bare hands, and the crowd is getting denser. A metal cage surrounds the tomb itself, and when the weeping pilgrims reach it, they interlace their fingers with its bars, and many press their face against it, fogging up the shiny metal with their breath. Some linger for minutes, some for seconds. In a single day, many thousands pass through the same cramped space—breathing the same air, touching the same surfaces, trading new and exotic diseases.
Don’t believe everything you think.
