Got me some progressive lens glasses
Failed what was likely my last flight physical due to shitty eyes, and had to get some glasses. Screwed up and brought the wrong reading glasses to the exam.
But the glasses are mostly free through insurance, so off I go to the world of vision specialists. Picked up a pair of progressive lens glasses, close-in at the bottom and far vision at the top.
These things #%^_ing suck a throbbing root. If i dont put the exact good reading spot on what I am looking at, I can't see shit. Peripheral vision? Kiss it goodbye, as I get weird distortion. They told me to point my nose at what I am looking at. WTF? Progressives are supposed to have some sort of central column of focus? Bleh.
As soon as I pass the flight physical, I am returning these pieces of shit. If I pass.

It takes time to get used to progressives, and they are mostly useful for office work, where the difference in distances you look at is not that great. I don't like driving and certainly don't like riding a motorcycle with them, excatly because of loss of peripheral vision.

Give them a month and you won't even notice you're wearing them anymore.
My head was swimming for first week or so, now they are fantastic.

Another option - monovision contact lenses. Doesn't work for everybody, but i like it a lot. The only problem long term is low grade conjunctivitis. I am actually considering one eye surgery for presbyopia.

I did the googling after I bought them. My mistake. Lots of opinions on pros and cons for sure.HorizonMan wrote:Give them a month and you won't even notice you're wearing them anymore.

So it would seem to me that plain old bifocals would work good enough and get rid of the loss of peripheral vision thing. That really annoys the hell out of me, maybe more or less than the line in my vision field from bifocals.
I'll try them for a good hard week and see how it goes. I almost ran down a pedestrian while wearing them home from the vision store.

Re: Got me some progressive lens glasses
I have progressives and bifocals and like the progressives best most of the time - especially when driving. Seeing dashboard controls is easier w/progressives.
My peripheral vision experiences were more related to the frames and lens size than anything else.

Nafod, go to Oakley.com and click on the military link. I get 2 pair a year of great frames for cheap.

Re: Got me some progressive lens glasses
When I was getting used to mine I wore them intermittently with simple reading glasses. Gradually got used to them and now at work I don't take them off, which eliminates the problem of losing, stepping or sitting on and otherwise misplacing normal reading glasses.

Re: Got me some progressive lens glasses
Monovision contacts work for me but also take some acclimation. If I have to do a lot of close-up work, they are fatiguing. At that point, I switch to reading glasses.Smet wrote:Another option - monovision contact lenses.

Re: Got me some progressive lens glasses
I opted for the progressive contacts as well, I was worried about mono vision messing with my depth perception.
I read that the progressive contacts don't work for everyone, but I found them to be comfortable to use right away. However the vision isn't as good up close or far away as glasses.

Re: Got me some progressive lens glasses
I got Lasik mono vision about 20 years ago. No muss no fuss with any kind of lenses. The distance eye got a little weaker after 20 years so I got fitted with a pair of glasses to make me 20/20 in each eye. Didn't like those so went back to plain old mono vision Lasik eyes. A good man knows his limitations! Stay safe Cap'n.
