Jack Donovan, Master Chim, & others screaming about masculinity

I was wondering what the folks here think about this kind of stuff. As a man, I think that the notion of listening to someone tell me how to be a man is a little laughable. While I feel like they bring up some salient points, I feel like those points quickly get swallowed up by their rants that, in my eyes at least, remind me of the very thing they are calling out in this video....men roleplaying what they think tough men should be.

You mean tough guys don't dress up and monetize an image by shooting videos and putting them online like every other dickwad does these days?

Say it ain't so

But they're taking shots so I guess they really are men.

I know this is going to sound teh ghey, but my thoughts on modern manliness pretty much fall in line with The Art of Manliness blog/podcast. A guy like your grandfather or great grandfather than came from the old country to the USA and worked his ass off to make a good life for his family. A guy who could fix anything around the house, kept abreast of the news and issues, knew how to dress. Had diverse interests and hobbies. Read a lot. What would pass as a 20th or 21st century Renaissance Man.

Fuck that tough guy, neck tattoo, cage fighting shit.
I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

I learned about being a man from my grandfather. The rest I figured out on my own (usually through fucking up) without any blogs or podcasts or any of that bullshit.

One of the downsides of the Internet is it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes the like-mindedness is stupid. Fat Acceptance, the Men's Rights Movement, CrossFit, and these clowns are enabling similar idiots to come together and celebrate their stupidity. In a normal community, they'd realize these ideas were stupid when they could only be exposed to a couple hundred people who all rejected them out of hand. The Internet allows them to bypass the screening process.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.

Signifiers of masculinity are culture-dependant and have changed over the years. Modes of dress, speech, whatever that seem "manly" now would have looked like bullshit to someone in revolutionary France, or ancient Akkad.

Do some work and do it well; support your friends and family when they need it and accept their support graciously when you need it; be of service to something greater than yourself. The rest is window dressing.

I echo Bud...

I really like some of the content on the AOM podcast...but anytime I see the following words

Real Man
Alpha Male
Masculine *

I pretty much just tune out. OTOH...The last three big recreationally interesting social issues, ghey in Mil. Gheys in marriage, Gender the fuck out of everything has been fun to watch...if only for the amusement of people coming to terms with the fact, everything they think about all three is a flimsy construct of fairly recent invention. That shit amuses me to no end.

My father and uncles lived through the depression and fought in WWII. They all worked 2 jobs post war, although the seasonal second job that they worked together might have been a way to hang out. I never once heard them whine about anything. And never heard them talk about "would a, could a, should a" been or ever wonder about "being a man".
During the depression, my father and his sisters would find some sugar, put it on wet bread and pretend it was cake. I heard about that for the first time from my aunt, ten years after my father passed. My uncle was sunk twice in the Pacific. The only times we ever heard about it were when the old guys would get together, toss back a couple of Rheingold's, and make fun of him for being a jinx. Never saw any of them back down from anything. They loved their families and made sure we were all taken care of. I can now recognize the joy they had in each other's company even when it was just talking about "niggers moving into the neighborhood" or how they'd never own a jap car (and they never did). By today's standards, they'd be labeled as hard core racists and they certainly had a clannish rejection of non-white groups but they also treated individuals with dignity and respect.
I never saw them be mean or cruel to anyone and they would help someone in trouble no matter who they were.

No one ever had to tell them what being a man was. They just fucking knew.

Art of Manliness is almost worse than the wannabe savages, because it's just salesman self-help dressed up with a healthy sense of self-loathing for being a salesman with a crossover SUV and two kids.

The only reasonable response to "the ancient Greeks had a term for/belief in" etc. is "they also believed in lube-free buggery."

That's not true, this is how pressing olive oil was discovered.

It was only much later that they learned that you could eat it.

The manlet in the trucker hat is Paul Waggener...that's the beta midget who wrote that fucking Centurion Training Manual bullshit that we were making fun of in the training forum a few months ago. Assatru folks are generally into health and well-being on some level, and I guess he's driving to be the iron guru amongst those who wish they were Vikings but are under the impression that Vikings are what you see in video games, movies, and Frank Frazetta paintings.

I have no idea about turd hair dude in the middle.

Jack Donovan is a fo' sho' faggot in the "drinks PBR and meets his boyfriends at deserted rest stops for violent sex" vein of faggotry. I think he has some interesting philosophical ideas about what lies at the core of masculinity, but commits the mistake of painting as virtues those things that really makes us dicks and almost justifies some of the butthurt, anti-fa, backlash feminism that you see. More to life than fucking and fighting, IMO.

Master Chim is an interesting guy if you think martial arts masters stricken with diabesity are interesting. I was following some of his shit on the Tubes for awhile, but he plays the same three notes over and over again and doesn't play them well. I don't understand his militant fervor over the fact that he's got a wife and kids. Big deal. I find it more amazing that he found a woman to lie down and breed with his Hagar the Horrible looking ass. As for the rest of his schtick, I don't mind the whole defending the last castle, white tribalism thing when it's done right, but he comes off as a shallow overcompensator.

Because they were men. I know these people, not THESE ^ people but I know them because there was a lot of that around me growing up. because of just a few things though, those kind of people are shit on a lot today and it's fucked up.

That's why there are things like the OP. All those they are assholes trying to make $$$ off of guys who should have left it at "Fight Club", there still is a lot of derision at being a normal man, as varied as that is. A lot is just media perception and one's ability to edit the shit that got through your eyes and ears.

Fuck you all though. I'm a real man because I will never leave my kids when most men these days would have split and been weekend dad. Fuck myself, suck it up and do what has to be done with what can get done with what one has and what one can earn. Love your kids before anything or anyone else ESPECIALLY yourself.

"What's the meaning of life?" how fucking trite and pretentious?! Live, make love and make more of your line and her's. Do what your species does to foster and raise your young so that they can go on and do the same. If you can't make more physically? You'll be there for others. If you are a man you know your role. Protect, Provide, Prepare.

Can't do that? Die!

The douche-chills in that video are strong. Maybe we can subscribe to the theory that the more you have to tell people, you're something; the more, perhaps, you're not?

I've met a handful of guys who were "bad people" but one stands out in particular. Sonny was a friend of a friend who was hanging out after a gig my band played one night. He was a giant Fijian dressed like he was going on Spring Break and only had very polite compliments to say after our set. We were on the road and accommodation had been bungled. Sonny had a place to sleep but gave it up to me, a 19 year old rake-thin wigga, and said he'd go and sleep in the tiny hatchback car his mate had driven.

The next day after he'd gone home, I found out he'd done 7 years for beating a man nearly to death with an armed robbery thrown in; he'd only just been let out. I'm not saying beating people to within an inch of their life or storming into a bank with a sawed-off is the mark of a man. It's just that Sonny, because he felt completely adequate, didn't have to telegraph it. Maybe he was so adequate he was trying to downplay it. That's what was intriguing to me.

The more I see these people put on a front, the more I recoil. Maybe it's how I've been raised. If you tell me a training course is going to be all fun n games, I know it's going to be arduous and you're going to be the lamest fuck walking on Earth. The funnest people always seem to to be the ones wanting to quieten down or quit whatever vices they have.

Hardcore people aren't making t-shirts. They're trying to stay anonymous.
