I have a little mirror from one of those canes you buy at Spencer's Gifts, but no stick. Can I use a coathanger? I bet I can use a coathanger.

The corner technique? Want to know or are you just being a smart ass?

Alot of people think and try to hug the wall before coming arond the corner but that just leads you to be in sight of anyone looking at it when you come around it.

Say I am in a hallway or anoutside wall of a building and I am coming to a corner?

You are an enemy coming down the other wall the outside corner ajoins?

I step back from the wall and this way as I walk sidways, gun up.

Unless you step away further from the wall as well, I will see you before you see me just enough to double tap your chest and single your face a split second before you see me.

I am sure anyone who went through urban CQB training knows this.

Maybe one of them here could better describe it for you? Or maybe they are saying "Darth, shut the fuck up, people know enough about CQB tactics as it is without some weirdo like you who somehow got some Spec Ops vets to like you enough to show you this shit telling them about this!"?

After learning it, I tested it out on people (no guns) and it works great. Same when I have played FPS games.

If you read No Easy Day, he diagrams how Bin Laden was shot and it was a similar technique from when the shooter is coming down a hall and his target is in a room, you side angle the doorway.

See we need to do a gathering? I can show this and then TOM, Bat's or Johno can say "Not bad but let me handle this. It's more like ..."

I think I get exactly what you mean. Would you call it strafing?

I'm interested in this stuff just because it's interesting. I read that book On Killing a few years ago, and the author made the same assertion you're making about the connection between First Person Shooters and a person's ability and willingness to kill. I don't remember specifics, but he talked about the US military's attempts at desensitizing certain personnel by exposing them to lots of graphic and violent videos, and by having them attack in life-like simulations as much as possible.

I guess I've been unsure how to feel about that connection, and hearing people like you talk about it helps me confirm that the connection is real, and not just some rhetorical bullshit. I also think my experience with FPSs has confirmed it. The simple fact that I can sit here and visualize what you're describing quite easily -- and I think I named it correctly, "strafing" -- is testament to the fact that I grew up playing DOOM and everything since. My only real contact with guns has been limited and sporadic, although I grew up learning how to be around and use guns until I was about 14, when going to my dad's, where most of the guns were, became more difficult, and I generally lost interest in them. That seems like a tangent, but I think it supports the conclusion that FPSs reinforce an awareness or a knowledge of how to kill with firearms.

Thanks for responding in earnest. Here's a mostly irrelevant picture.

Nice pic.

Funny you should post it as one of the guys who taught me gunfighting when I wroked at the range used that as an illistration of a point in a conversation. That and the way he killed Greedo in the first. " Distract, question them and kill them."

I always wanted a pic of Han on the torture device with Vader standing there saying "So your fucking my daughter? Asshole!"

I read On Killing years ago and my aforementioned exp. with GTA and my truck is one of the things that jived with what he says as does the story about the Aikido instructor who grabed the guy by the throat and the "release" of dropping a target.

I also know a few Spec Ops guys from the old Dojo and time with Trooper who talked about "the magic 2%".

Grossman has a lot of good points but his "solutions" smack of a careerist officer who spent to much time in academia and has adopted their love of telling others how they should live.

There were lot's of Grossman debates after hours after Jujutsu back then.

50% Brutal truth, 20% Food for thought and 30% Fuck that, was about the consenses.

I do suggest it to students but after Rory Miller's "Meditations on Violence" Peyton Quinn's "A Bouncer's Guide to Barroom Brawling" and David Hackworth's " About Face" and "Steel My Soldier's Heart" and Keegan's " The Face of Battle" as well as the Koryu sereis and articles by Hunter B. Armstrong of the IHS.

Groosman has a book with Loren Christianson I need to borrow from him.
