My pup had a stroke

Post by Dunn »

Woke up yesterday morning to my Border Collie showing loss of movement on the left side. She was unable to stand on her own and most certainly unable to walk with the head leaning to the left. Took her to the vet and it seems that she has had a stroke. Doctor gave her some prednisone to help with inflammation/swelling and told us to monitor her over the weekend. Today she is able to stand and move about the yard decently, though she is still favoring her left side and shows unsteady gait.

She is 8 years old, my running buddy, and her blood work looks like a dog much younger. Doc says we will discuss options tomorrow. Curious if any of you have had any issues with this. I love that little fucker and she seems like she is 75% back to where she was. Any info would be appreciated.

One ray of hope. Very active dogs --- frisbee jumpers, police dogs --- often strain some kind of muscle in their back/spine. Happened to my dog. He seemed confused, lost movement, fell over. The vet --- who treats the kind of active dogs I mentioned --- knew exactly what it was. Said "keep him calm for a week. No running. No ball chasing." He got better the next day and a week later was up to his old tricks.

Did your dog do anything strenuous the day before? Something where he had to jump up like catch a frisbee? Or maybe a game of tug?

Usually the sudden loss of movement comes right after the trauma. Since your dog was asleep, your vet is probably right. But it's worth asking about.

I don't know. I feel for you.

My ferret got cancer (they are very much like dogs) and I still cry when I talk about having him put down. It was 20 years ago. Awful awful thing. (empathy)

Hope she gets better. I really do.

Damn Dunn, I hope everything works out OK for your dog.

If it helps at all, my ex's Weimaraner had a stroke/event last year and didn't show any permanent ill effects after a few days of recovery.

Doc says we will discuss options tomorrow.
If one of the options is putting her down, kick your Vet in the balls & find a new one.
She is already on her feet. Dogs are way more adaptable than are humans…they don't dwell in the past, they deal with life as it is now.

Unless her dog food bill is killing your budget, let her hang around & enjoy her family. If she is suffering, put her down.

***
Apologies if I'm jumping to conclusions on the putting her down option.

Things are looking better. She's navigating the house and it's hard wood floors better and able to take the steps by herself, though it tires her out. Vet said to keep monitoring her but unless the symptoms worsen just keep up the prednisone and once it runs out we will go from there. She also said that as long as she is able to eat, drink, and go to the bathroom on her own then it really comes down to what we are willing to put up with since she's still happy and here. On that note, she seems good and we are hopeful.

My parents' border collie had a stroke some years back. I don't remember the details precisely but believe that the dog was a little less active and a little more goofy following it but was otherwise fine.

I could call them and ask for further details if you like.
