Hard to make shoulders forward of hands placing load on mid back match with Tate's "Mistake #5: Not pulling the bar backShaf wrote:Tate and Rippetoe have apparently talked about this, and they aren't really in disagreement.
The deadlift is all about leverage and positioning. Visualize a teeter totter. What happens when the weight on one end is coming down? The other end goes up. So if your body is falling backward, what happens to the bar? It goes up! If your weight is falling forward the bar will want to stay down. So if you weigh 250 pounds and you can get your bodyweight to work for you, it would be much like taking 250 pounds off the bar. For many natural deadlifters this is a very instinctive action. For others it has to be trained.
Proper positioning is important here. If you're standing too close to the bar it'll have to come over the knee before you can pull back, thus going forward before it goes backward. If your shoulders are in front of the bar at the start of the pull, then the bar will want to go forward, not backward. If your back isn't arched the bar will also want to drift forward.
For some lifters, not being able to pull back can be a muscular thing. If you're like myself, I tend to end up with the weight on the front of my feet instead of my heels. This is a function of my quads trying to overpower the glutes and hamstrings, or the glutes and hamstrings not being able to finish the weight and shifting to the quads to complete the lift. What will happen many times is you'll begin shaking or miss the weight. To fix this problem you need to add in more glute ham raises, pull-throughs and reverse hypers. "
Main point is Oly influenced DL pulling is just wrong, but @fit is so badly swinging from Oly's nuts they can't explain to the clones that you pull a clean differently than a DL.
Even if you are morbidy obese.
Prediction: Mike Burgener will get the heave-ho in about a year. Casey can't hang with the @fit girls afterall...

OK, Jack, just for shits and giggles, post some vids of where a deadlifter actually starts with his hands in front of his shoulders. I just think the "pulling back" thing is more of a feeling than an actual action.
Bolton, for example...his shoulders are always over the bar. Benedikt Magnusson too.

So, you've got arguably, the two best deadlifters in the world, and they are starting with their shoulders over the bar.
Kind of throws a monkey wrench into that particular description of how Dave Tate says you should pull.
I agree with the OL jock swinging though.

As an aside, Crossfit.com and kettlebelltraining.com were both mentioned in the latest Maxim.
As and aside to the aside, Maxim has gotten so shitty that you can't even consider it the same magazine compared to about a year ago. About half the thickness, and it's content that's gone away, not ads. This is what happens when you leave your core market behind and attempt to become another generic men's magazine.

Years ago when I discovered it. I read it cover to cover because there were two serious articles, with the usual reviews, and overgrown boy bling. Now it is pretty much gaming reviews and girls who look 16 years old.
I had issues with Geri Ryan and Natasha Henstridge. Big difference.

Shaf, you're off by about four or five years. I discovered Maxim when it first came out. The writing was top notch and as Tom said, there would always be a serious article or two. I almost immediately subscribed to it but it eventually faded into a shell of what it once was. Success breeds contempt for what got you there in the first place.

I've sub to maxim since the beginning. The british version use to be better, but I'm not sure any more. The magazine store closed here, and it's a pain to find stuff. BTW ebay is the place to get subscriptions. They cost so little, for a lot of magazines, even if you see on article per issue you like it's worth it.

One over 500.
nafod: Coach didn't have qualifiers for equipment use. He just said XF would get you over 500. Precious little data to support that.

Same thing appears to have happened to Men's Fitness. A few years ago it could either be thought of as "Muscle And Fitness Lite" or "Men's Health for Ignorant 20 year olds". If the current issue is anything to go on (and Mahler's article notwithstanding) the staff seem to be determined to turn it into just another Lad Mag.Shaf wrote:As an aside, Crossfit.com and kettlebelltraining.com were both mentioned in the latest Maxim.

On the positive side, FHM is closing its doors with this month's issue. Nothing against Lad Mags (or journalist types who are just trying to earn a living) but Jesus, these things are stoopid. One less in the pack is a good thing.
