LOL @ Couch criticizing Twight for having predominantly endurance athletes, as opposed to, you know, NO ATHLETES.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
Re: The couch thread
Why is it that couch never names any of these athletes that he uses as examples? The non Gym Jones variant of CrossFitters are bettering their Gym Jones brethren at everything we can measure, so Mr. Twight has to dismiss it, curiously, as “CrossFit” and not “sport”.

I was talking to a friend who works at the local @Fit gym and he was making fun of the hype around the NYC Marathon coming up. He said that the Kenyans weren't "fit" for anything other than running 26 miles and that his @Fit "athletes" would dominate them at anything outside of running long distance.
I asked him how much money his "athletes" were making at their @Fit sport. Because those top endurance athletes are earning a pretty damn good living at their specialization.

Long post but kinda funny.
I just started at a new gym last month so dont really know anyone there and they dont know me. The only thing they see me doing is the Crossfit WOD (or my attempts at them).
My background is in powerlifting but I have been CFing for a few months now. Today I decided to try a heavy deadlift and see where I was.
Started my warm-up with behind the neck push presses and was told by the guy benching in the smith machine these are real bad for me and I will most certainly hurt my shoulders, I told him I would be careful, he stopped watching me once I got to 315x5.
Next I went on to good mornings, this was just going to be a light warm-up until one of the trainers told me how bad they were and how many people hurt their backs. So now my ego took over and I worked up to 365x8 and made sure to tell him my back was still OK.
Now to start the deadlifting. There is only one area open enough for this so two pretty big guys asked if they could work in, so I said sure. I just put on my headphones and let them do their thing. We got to 405 and they start tightening up the belts and knee wraps and wrist straps. Takes them about 5mins to get ready to do a set of 3, looked like a max effort to. My turn comes up and they offer all this equipment and tell me how badly I will get hurt without it and that I really should work on my form and on and on. Now I am kind of annoyed I use some of their chalk and knock out a set of 12, put the bar down and tell them I am now warmed up enough to move on to some working sets. I grind out a set ot 5 with 585 and they decide it is time to do their power rack bicep curls. I finally get up to 675x2. Not to bad for just doing CF for a couple months.
Long post but the moral is you can get strong as hell on Crossfit, and if you bench in a smith machine and do bicep curls in the power rack you should keep your mouth shut.

Hmmm....
A few things that make me toss the BS hankie and hopefully the refs will review the call...
Don't know many/any powerlifters who do behind the neck push presses...
Nobody does good mornings, particularly sets of 8, before deadlifting...
Almost nobody wraps their knees before deadlifting...this sounds like pure BS.
No Powerlifter is going to do this workout: 405x12, 585x5, 675x2
assuming he WAS a PLer, what were his lifts before his WOD experience...?
Maybe he was also a ninja?

It might have been Chad Waterbury, but his deadlift is 900 lbs (3 X bodyweight)

Re: The couch thread
What he doesn't tell anyone is that back in 1974, a wrestling coach from Hermosa Beach named John Jesse came out with a training book for wrestlers. Glassdick was right down the road from him in Pasadena. Jesse was very well known in CA back in the 70's. Glassdick did his best to copy Jesse's methods with no credit of course. He throws together some catchy names for workouts and gets a following of pencil pushers with no athletic experience. The rest is history. What makes me curious is the ex-gymnast stuff - claims: "My first training job was in 1974 as a gymnastics coach at the Pasadena, California Y.W.C.A. I was an 18-year-old college student. ". Also claims that the limp is an 'old rings injury'.
The ironic twist to the story is that Glassdick didn't even do a good job at copying Jesse. John Jesse trained real wrestlers and did a damn good job. Glassdick didn't do shit in gymnastics and never trained anyone significant, and he knows it. He doesn't name names for the simple fact that he doesn't have names to name.
He's a fucking joke.

I love how couch says "scant experience". Twight was one of the world's most premier climbers in his day. What has couch done? When Mr. Twight speaks of “athletes”, it’s important to understand that he is referring exclusively to long distance athletes. This is the only kind of sport that he has ever participated in or has but scant experience with.

Re: The couch thread
oh, i got a funny story, kinda long, but pretty neat huh?
i started training at a new gym and nobody knows me and i don't know nobody. i used to take karate from Grandmaster Dong and learn ninja moves from Ashida Kim, but this is a BJJ gym, so most of my stuff doesn't really apply; or so i thought.
anyway, my 1st day Royce Gracie was there (it's an affiliate of his i guess) and i rolled with him abit. i was really suprised at how defenseless he was against all those old time ninja moves. i made him give up like 4 or 5 times before he finally and moved onto someone else. he was really nice though.
i guess the moral of the story is the old stuff has been around so long for a reason and if you wanna roll around and get all sweaty with dudes then just admit you're ghey and stop using martial arts as a beard.

The 700# Crossfit Deadlifter remains mythical. It was a good attempt by an inexperienced troll though.
PL54 has it pegged perfectly.
PL54 has it pegged perfectly.
It's hilarious, but nobody has EVER gotten "strong as hell" on Crossfit. They've gotten stronger, more fit, and good at pull ups, but "strong as hell"? That's why they brought Rip in.A few things that make me toss the BS hankie and hopefully the refs will review the call...
Don't know many/any powerlifters who do behind the neck push presses...
***Shaf's addition: I know so few PLs who have the flexibility to do 315x5 BTN push presses that this is almost certainly a lie. I know some strong strongman types, some Highland throwers and some OL types who can do this, but ZERO powerlifters.
Nobody does good mornings, particularly sets of 8, before deadlifting...
***Shaf's addition: 365x8 Good Mornings is pretty fucking heavy. It's not impossible, but it's pretty damn heavy. Like PL54 said, nobody does GM sets before deadlifts
Almost nobody wraps their knees before deadlifting...this sounds like pure BS.
***Shaf's addition: Hahahah. Fucking retard. JR nailed this. Plus adding bends and wrist straps....HHAHAHAAHHAH.
No Powerlifter is going to do this workout: 405x12, 585x5, 675x2
***Shaf's Note: Exactly. It might look like that if the fucker could DL 800#s. Look at Kroczaleski's DL days for a lower volume approach

Re: The couch thread
That is what cracks me up the most. Glassdick runs his mouth in 2003 about developing 700 pound deadlifts. Years pass and no one in Crossfit is pulling anything close. None of his dipshits have the balls to question him, but just in case they do, Glassdick runs to Rip to add more strength work. It's hilarious, but nobody has EVER gotten "strong as hell" on Crossfit. They've gotten stronger, more fit, and good at pull ups, but "strong as hell"? That's why they brought Rip in.
Look back at this post from Greg E. for confirmation

Glassdick first wanted you to believe he invented everything and it is untouchable, despite the fact that he's been scrambling to change everything in the last few years.
He's a joke and anyone with shit for brains can figure him out.

Yes, Wrestling Physical Conditioning Encyclopedia is the name. You may be able to find it at a library.
Crossfit is a shitty copy of Jesse. Glassdick thought he was in the clear when the book went out of print, but there are still some of us old men around who didn't forget.

I'm pretty sure we've discussed this here before. James Jesse's book is good. I wouldn't call it great. However, it's remarkable in the fact that it was the genesis of Dinosaur Training and Crossfit. You can also find sandbag, swingbell, and club shit in there too, IIRC (I'm not sure about the club shit)
Re: The couch thread
Don't forget the Nekkid Worrier. It's in there too, with all sorts of intermediate exercises for one arm pushups, chins, pullups, etc. etc.

If this is still the case, then I have to rethink my position on Coochfit. Hitting the bars near the next cert, as well as some local affiliates, may yield some interesting in field sexin.
although I imagine most of these broads to be like Shari, tough and gristly like a 4 dollar Vegas steak, there is the horned up enthusiasm that might make it worthwhile. as long as their distended clit wasn't up to cock sized proportions, this could even be fun.
