I like the photo with Shari's daddy. He's got a haunted look, like he's hearing Chris Rock yell "Your only job is - keep your daughter off the pole" in continuous play somewhere inside his head.
Damn.

While there is a hell of a lot of greasy bathwater in Crossfit, it seems like there might be a tiny baby or two hiding in there as well. Several Xfit people have told me that many of the affiliates have little or no dealing with HQ and vary widely in how they implement the CF system, so my criticisms are mostly directed at the main Crossfit.com website. That in my opinion is the ultimate public face of Crossfit, (if someone is looking for info, that's where they're going to end up) and it’s also where they screw up so badly.
So, here are my thoughts on Crossfit and what they’ve done right:
1. They emphasize “functional” movement rather than gym machines, etc. I'm not sure what "functional" movement is, but I'd rather see people doing multijoint lifts with barbells and things rather than sitting in a machine and grinding out reps while chewing gum.
2. They use varying physical challenges rather than the same old thing all the time.
3. Their business model of certs, affiliates, etc is obviously well-structured, since they have grown like a weed.
4. They emphasize a sense of community. About half the pics on the CF main website are group pics from various certs and events. It makes the participants feel that they are part of something much larger.
5. Likewise, many of their workouts are done in groups. Our society is pathologically isolated IMO so getting people together is a good thing in my book.
And the negatives, mostly from Crossfit.com:
1. Coach Glassman. Hostile and thin-skinned. Posts on the CF board get censored, folks get banned for disagreeing with him, etc. He also does not “walk the walk.” I’ve never seen a pic or vid of him actually doing anything, and he looks out of shape. His prose is impenetrable and relies heavily on pseudo-science gobbledygook. He accuses everyone and his brother of ripping him off and has turned against DJ and others for not "supporting" him sufficiently.
2. Their sense of community tends towards being insular and elitist.
3. They rely heavily on supposed ties to law enforcement and military orgs. CF is a poster child for the “we’re so badass” fitness model.
4. Unsubstantiated claims. They claim to be the elite of the elite and badmouth other groups and individuals. Some of the statements are patently absurd.
5. Functional movement, yeah, but so much of it makes no fucking sense. Tire out the erectors with power cleans, then do deads. Do high reps in exercises that rely heavily on skill and become dangerous when done fatigued. Pukey and rhabdo. WTF?
6. Public drama, online for all to see. Divorce, adultery, affairs, all very ugly, all very public, all very embarrassing. Women doing weird rambling semi-nude monologues in poorly-lit hotel rooms. This is a major turn-off. (As a public face of your company, I mean.)
7. Selling with sex. Years ago at the RKC, DuCane told me over dinner that he shied away from using sex in his marketing in any way, because he felt it was a slippery slope. If you do Y, then someone else does Y+1, and downhill it goes. I don't know what DD is doing for marketing now, but CF shows this to be true. It started with comments about various online videos they posted "look at her boobs!" and ended up with Taylor Wane or whatever her name is. Recruiting a porn star is another WTF? moment.

If you can't squat full, you squat partway. If you can't run, you walk. If you can't walk, then you become a badass band-usin', UBE-smokin' BMF in a wheelchair.
There was a guy (trainer, actually) at the Y I used to go to. He was in a wheelchair most of the time, with severely limited leg mobility. Plenty of times I saw him pull himself up out of it, get into a walker, and do a circuit around the gym floor. Painfully slow, sweating buckets the whole time.
Ring injury? Fuck. You know, that guy wasn't fat, either.

What's remarkable about @fit is that it's such a great methodology for broads, but not for guys. @fit turns women into hardbodied butterfaces. @fit turns guys into lanky strings of ginger piss.
The reason? They both get told to use the same weight for the WOD. Lifting 135lbs makes the chicks buff and the guys tired.

Varying the challenge is also part of their problem. It's exercise ADD. It also contributes to an illusory sense of progress as it's easier to make trivial progress on low-level versions of lots of attributes rather than get them to a high level in some focussed way. Getting to 2 x bw deadlift, easy. Getting well beyond that (say 2.5, or 3), hard.GoDogGo! wrote: 1. The impatient bastard part of me doesn't like point 1, either, as now I have to wait for squat racks and platforms that used to be empty. Now I have to wait for some Crossfuck 'deadlifting' 80kg.
Plus, the emphasis on money is fucking any sense of community. I've always benefitted from free advice from gym rats and got to some half-decent numbers largely by myself - or at least without forking over the green. Now you have sports/MA/MMA forums where you get on the S&C sub-board and everyone halfway involved with Cro$$fit is screaming "get a coach" constantly. Because learning to do the right thing in the gym should make some underqualified retard $100/hour, right? And bring in a revenue stream sufficient to make them a living?
These ones apply to lots of things, like Scientology, Multi-level Marketing, etc. Who cares about how well it's done if the product is a scam?GoDogGo! wrote: 3. Their business model of certs, affiliates, etc is obviously well-structured, since they have grown like a weed.

Re: The couch thread
I disagree with #5
If you have 1 idiot it is sad..a group of idiots is dangerous
People should train alone and keep it to themselves. I do not care how some fatty lost 15 pounds because they still are 20 lbs overweight. I do not care how some chic widdled her breasts away and morphed into a manly version of herself. I do not care that some half assed juicer got some muscles on his skinny frame. I do not care if some guy can TGU a "bulldog", deadlift 2 times his bw, or perform 25 pullups. I do not care if some shithead wrecked their knees doing some fucked up movement with way too much weight. I just dont care...I will more than likely live a longer, healthier life than all these tattoo wearing, facial piercing, drug using, sexually confused fools

I think the variety is just fine. change it up, keep it moving. No harm done IMO. The harm is in the point in the second half, about claiming elite status on anything. If you want to have fun, move around a lot, learn new things, then the @fit model is fine.Onan The Barbarian wrote: Varying the challenge is also part of their problem. It's exercise ADD. But you WON'T be elite or very good at any specific thing, so don't go claiming otherwise. That's what I've got a problem with.

That is truth.
It's not so much the programming that's offensive but the people involved. From the top to the bottom @Fit is 90% tards and fags.
