I can't tell what's real and what's parody anymore.
Elite blood? I've met several world class elite athletes (e.g. olympic medalists) and enjoyed a drink with them. Of course they are not getting wasted the night before a competition, but enjoying a few glasses of wine or beer once in a while (even during training season) is not going to make a dent in your athletic ability, let's get real here people.
Then there are world class athletes who do party during competition season and are still amazing performers: e.g. Bode Miller.

I suspect that World Champions are winners in spite of, rather than because of their bad habits.
CrossFit has demonstrated time and again that world class sports specialists have plenty of room to improve their training and diet, and the fact that some of them drink should be viewed as an impediment to further athletic success rather than some sort of self-congratulatory attempt at "balance" or "moderation." Nobody ever achieved anything remarkable by being moderate about it.

With a continuously running clock do one pull-up the first minute, two pull-ups the second minute, three pull-ups the third minute... continuing as long as you are able.
Use as many sets each minute as needed.
Post number of minutes completed to comments."The art is in the movement, the magic is in the mix" Coach Glassman?

There was a pretty good sized article in the old Pure Power mag on alcohol. Basically, you have to drink a fair amount (something like 7 drinks) to start inducing hormonal changes and even at that level it wasn't that pronounced. I remeber reading a great little aside in MILO about a hung-over-as-fuck Pirros Dimas front squatting something like 280-290 kg.

No, it's brilliant. Based on that "I want elite CF blood" shit from a ways back.CultBuster wrote:Idiot!Alcohol has no place in the diet of an elite athlete. It will make your blood profile non-elite. If you want elite Crossfit blood and elite sports performance it will hold you back.

Doesn't matter? Did she get the definitions of death and wellness confused?in8girl- well bloodwork showed abnormal kidney functions still, still spilling out protein. No more swelling in extremities, though. The doc is going with lupus nephritis- either rhabdo induced a flare, or a lupus flare made me susceptible to rhabdo. Either way, doesn't matter. Sleep, nutrition and stress management are my keys to handling this. CrossFit is part of my identity- and that'll be part of my wellness Rx as well.

Had a great class I college "Chemistry and Public Policy" where I recall looking at a Danish study regarding the net beneficial increases in overall health markers from daily alchohol consumption...improvements were steady up to 3 drinks a day..then they leveled off up to 8-9 drinks per day before a slow down tick...i recall it was something like 12 drinks a day before any significant neg effects...this study has informed my drinking ever since.Dano wrote:There was a pretty good sized article in the old Pure Power mag on alcohol. Soda water=carbonated water, correct? Well, as long as its not flavored. Beer is carbonated and beer is good so carbonated whiskey can't be bad by default. What's the attraction of adding soda water anyway? Just curious.

EDIT/ADD:
As usual, no answer. Are you surprised???Dear Glassman,
Been doing crossfit for about a year. Former Globo gymer. If you are the inventor of crossfitting then why do the seperate affiliates create their own Workout of the days? I understand the constantly varied concept, yet is there any science behind your programing? Are the workouts randomly selected? Who programs the main page WODS? Which program should I follow? Sincerely interested.

Re: The couch thread
Yes, soda water is just carbonated water, usually with a touch of salt. Has no flavoring. Just adds some fizz (which gets alcohol into your bloodstream faster) and cuts the bite. Vodka + soda = good. Give me my bourbon on the rocks, but I can't fault a man for adding a bit of soda or a splash of water...it's basically the same as adding ice.Dano wrote:Fat Cat wrote:I like whiskey and soda water.Dano wrote:BTW, tainting whiskey with any other substance besides an ice cube or more whiskey (or vodka as one of my buddies used to do. he called it a "Lucky Russian") is the gay.

And even if (work with me here) one drink did cause a slight decrease in performance, who gives a flying fuck? You're not competing for any titles. You are doing a workout. I'd understand this discussion if we were talking about giving up alcohol to make the Olympics. We're not...we're talking about shaving 2 seconds off a Fran time, which has frankly never done shit for anyone.
Re: The couch thread
I thought "fizz" is just a mouth feel and taste enchancer. What is the mechanism by which carbonation increases absorption of alcohol? I believe it is a myth. Cooch, please comment.

Note the subtle use of troll...how to troll and not be deleted. Thanks Dan and Paul for your reply. Maybe I'm looking too deep into crossfit. Maybe crossfit is simply just training. My question is: How can you compare a person with the expertise and knowledge that Greg Glassman self proclaims, to a person who spends $1000.00 to attend a level 1 cert., then decides to open a box and post a WOD? It seems to me that Greg Glassman's crossfit.com should be considered the only workout of the day. Any other workout is simply an imitation and should not be considered crossfit. By telling somebody to go to an affiliate and do whatever workout they tell you discredits anything that Coach Greg Glassman has created.

Alcohol concentration and carbonation of drinks: the effect on blood alcohol levels.
Roberts C, Robinson SP.
University of Manchester, Department of Postgraduate Medicine & Dentistry, 4th Floor, Barlow House, Minshall St., Manchester M1 3DZ, United Kingdom.
Alcohol absorption and elimination vary considerably amongst individuals, and are subject to influences from a variety of factors. The effects of alcohol concentration and beverage mixer type on the rate of alcohol absorption, in a controlled environment was studied. 21 subjects (12 male, 9 female) consumed a solution containing alcohol, on three separate occasions. The three solutions were, A: Neat vodka (37.5 vol%), B: Vodka mixed with still water (18.75 vol%), C: Vodka mixed with carbonated water (18.75 vol%). The volume of alcohol each subject consumed was determined by Widmark's equation. The alcohol was drunk in a 5 min period following an overnight fast and breath alcohol concentrations were measured over a 4h period using a breathalyser. 20/21 subjects absorbed the dilute alcohol at a faster rate than the concentrated alcohol. The difference between the absorption rates was found to be significant (p<0.001). The use of a carbonated mixer had varying effects on the alcohol absorption rate. 14/21 subjects absorbed the alcohol with the carbonated mixer at a faster rate, with 7 subjects showing either no change or a decrease in rate. The mean absorption rate for solution C was 4.39+/-0.45 (mg/100ml/min), and the difference between this absorption rate and that with the still mixer (1.08+0.36) was significant (p=0.006).
