Re: The couch thread
Just in case any @F lurkers want to know Rip's position on how he perceives strength to fit into their "idea" of fitness [brackets mine]:
This is why @F is falling apart...after a while nearly everyone not blinded by Kool-Aid poisoning realizes this...and why the OG @Fers aren't winning their own comps now. Plain and simple STRONGER guys are coming in to do the stupid metcons.First thing we need to get out of the way: strength is the basis of athletic ability. If you are a good athlete, you are stronger than a less-good athlete. If you want to be a better athlete, you get stronger. If you are already very strong, there is room in your training for the development of other aspects of performance [yes, the "other 9" aspects]. But there is a very high likelihood that you are not that strong, since most people are not. You may think you’re very strong, but really, you know you could get stronger, don’t you? Sure you do. You may have convinced everybody else that you’re strong enough; you may even be convinced of this yourself. This is not productive, because if you can get stronger you should do so, and a lack of strength may be why you’re not performing as well as you know you should be. If your progress is stuck, and has been for a while, get stronger and see what happens. It works every time, and this is why I know it’s true. [this is important data, Tsypkin!]
You say you’re a runner, and that you don’t need to be strong. Get stronger and see what happens to your times. Or you’re a tennis player: get stronger and watch your game improve. Even in sports not usually associated with strength display, the stronger athletes are the better athletes. You may not like it because it makes your carefully cultivated Bosu-ball and wobbleboard “functional” training skill set less valuable, but any athlete that trains a simple barbell strength program and improves his squat, press, and deadlift will become better at his sport than you can make him with alternate 3 lb. dumbbell seated Swiss-ball presses.
Strength can be built for years, much longer than neuromuscular skill can be perfected. This is because the adaptation for increased strength involves more than just neural adaptations. The musculoskeletal architecture happily adapts to stress over the lifespan of the organism. Your growth slows as you approach your genetic capacity to develop, but strength development continues throughout life if training is designed to facilitate it. “Dad strength” is explained by this phenomenon, as is the ability of masters powerlifters to break open records. And it is commonly recognized that a man’s powerlifting career typically peaks in his mid to late thirties, fifteen to twenty years after starting the sport.

Many on here are stronger than former Steeler, Lynn Swann. I doubt anyone can match him in anything athletically. Only a stronger Lynn Swann.ab g-d wrote:This is patent bullshit- but please feel free to continue on about @F.Quack Attack wrote:Just in case any @F lurkers want to know Rip's position on how he perceives strength to fit into their "idea" of fitness [brackets mine]:First thing we need to get out of the way: strength is the basis of athletic ability. Re: The couch thread
Specific application of strength. Swann is strong enough in all areas it takes to be a great wideout. There is nothing where he will be considered weak I would guess.
I didn't read the Rippetoe comment but if he is specifically citing powerlifts and the power clean as foundational for sport success then he is incorrect.

Same article:

http://startingstrength.com/articles/no ... ppetoe.pdf
CrossFit is an example of a training method that neglects to make full use of the fact that strength will increase rapidly if you ask it to, and that a strength increase makes all other fitness parameters increase along with it in an untrained person, male or female. It works very well since it is most people’s first exposure to an exercise protocol that’s supposed to be hard, and the impression of most inexperienced people who have tried it is very positive.

It's hard for Rip to make himself clear with his genius on sports performance. What with his blindingly bright ego and the cloud of the smell of his own ass that he loves so much he allows to envelope him like a personal fog bank.T200 wrote:Specific application of strength. http://www.board.crossfit.com/showthrea ... 7a&t=55552Bo,
I'm pretty sure this hate extends past the internet for this crew. At least I would like to think so. I would hate for them to be a bunch of loud mouth pussies, whose balls shrivel up as soon as they walk away from the keyboard.

. Posting this pic is probably a little shallow....but truthfully , I could use a little ego boost! :)

Re: The couch thread
Just a little light faggotry to spice things up...
14 Days Skiing, no WODs - How much will I loose?
One of my biggest motivations in doing Crossfit (besides Crossfit itself and the cool people I get to do it with at CF Zürich!) is to develop my strength, balance and general sense of indestructibility for downhill skiing.
Well, it's that time of year, and I'll spend the 14 days in the Swiss alps - well make that, 13. Day one is already gone ... (sniff!)
The one thing I'm worrying about: All in all, I'll be missing 16 days of mainpage WODs. Of course, no: I won't spend the two weeks sprawled in a lawn chair eating potato chips - but there's be no thrusters, no cleans, no GHD situps, no presses - and no bleeding hands, no waking up wondering what kind of DOMS I get today. (Come to think of it, this isn't all bad!!) ;-)
However, I'm a little worried about getting back to CF in 2 weeks, 2 days and having lost a lot of the gains I've made over the past three or four months. And of getting the kind of DOMS that make me feel like walking death for four or five days.
How much am I going to lose during a 2 week layoff from CF?
Mike
P.S. I am thinking that getting in 30 pullups, 40 pushups, 50 situps and 60 squats each day might help a little. Easier said than done, though, after a full day skiing ...

You know when you look at it like that @F isn't much different than all those crazy-ass figure girls and other crazy bitches that like to chain themselves to the treadmill for three hours a day because they're addicted to cardio.

Re: The couch thread
For novices strength increase does improve almost everything. For non novices strength just increases speed. The question is ho wmuch strength do you need? The answer lies somewhere between stronger than you are now and stronger than your competition. But even in a novice athlete your strength to skill work is no less than a 1:3 ratio.Quack Attack wrote:Same article:

I have too, and it's mainly the cardio obsession most of them seem to have. Nothing against them, at least they aren't trying to wreck their joints for time.T200 wrote:I trained a few figure competitors and have nothing bad to say about them.
