Re: The couch thread
My goodness. That is incredibly sad to hear. Dede Whitwood's death is exactly what people have been trying to scream about this stupid @F bullshit for quite some time now.
An incredibly sad and terrible loss for her friends and family, that I'm sure HQ and the top of the food chain will spin onto the affiliate or at least keep insulated from. Surely there will be no mention on the mainsite.

Re: The couch thread
Wow. A death in the gym.
It's odd, just the other day I had to defend my decision to get rid of box jumps and box jumping as we discovered it was the overwhelming "number one" cause of injuries in our weightroom. I stopped doing the insane stuff, even as punishment, with the fear it would hurt a kid's season.
A death in the weightroom is nearly unthinkable. With Bench Presses, we always have the double hands above the face and side spotters, but even if someone crashes a bar (like my friend, Craig Carter) it just results in a lot of dental work. But, to die?
As a coach for 31 years, I have had my share of injuries, from severe to slight, and I have been in non-athletic "life saving" situations, but I have wonder about this.

Re: The couch thread
I was cruising around Robb Wolf's site, and I noticed a link to "Narcissistic Personality Disorder". I imagine it was put there in the hopes that @Fers would read it and maybe see something in the mirror (other than ELEET phitness). Seemed worth a chuckle, so I followed it. The extent to which it described too many @Fers was outrageous:
http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders ... order.aspx
http://my.clevelandclinic.org/disorders ... order.aspx
What is narcissistic personality disorder?
Narcissism is a term used to describe a focus on the self and self-admiration that is taken to an extreme. The word “narcissism” comes from a Greek myth in which a handsome young man named Narcissus sees his reflection in a pool of water and falls in love with it.
Narcissistic personality disorder is one of a group of conditions called dramatic personality disorders. People with these disorders have intense, unstable emotions, and a distorted self-image. Narcissistic personality disorder is further characterized by an abnormal love of self, an exaggerated sense of superiority and importance, and a preoccupation with success and power. However, these attitudes and behaviors do not reflect true self-confidence. Instead, the attitudes conceal a deep sense of insecurity and a fragile self-esteem. People with this personality disorder also tend to set unrealistic goals.
What are the symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder?
In many cases, people with narcissistic personality disorder:
* Are self-centered and boastful
* Seek constant attention and admiration
* Consider themselves better than others
* Exaggerate their talents and achievements
* Believe that they are entitled to special treatment
* Are easily hurt but might not show it
* Might take advantage of others to achieve their goals
Other common traits of narcissistic personality disorder include the following:
* Preoccupation with fantasies that focus on unlimited success, power, intelligence, beauty, or love [or fitness?]
* Belief that he or she is “special” and unique, and can only be understood by other special people
* Expectation that others will automatically go along with what he or she wants
* Inability to recognize or identify with the feelings, needs, and viewpoints of others
* Envy of others or a belief that others are envious of him or her
* Hypersensitivity to insults (real or imagined), criticism, or defeat, possibly reacting with rage, shame, and humiliation
* Arrogant behavior and/or attitude

Maybe SAR or JudoB can elaborate better, but AFAIK if you've got a predisposition to an AA and have been growing one for a while, you can blow from any/none activity. Hefting groceries, sitting on the toilet, whatever. As much as I think @F is for asshats, I don't think you can blame it for this.Danny John wrote:Wow. A death in the gym.

I've spoke with some people who train highway patrolmen and military and they don't use physical punishment anymore. The mainly order the problem child to do some ridiculous report/essay on a specific subject. There is no worse punishment for a meathead than to have to use his brain.Danny John wrote:I stopped doing the insane stuff, even as punishment, with the fear it would hurt a kid's season.
I don't know if @fit contributed due to the nature of her condition but they still fucking suck and it's only a matter of time before they are back in the public spotlight for injuring someone. I'd love to see an undercover expose that brought up the rate of injuries in @fit training/boxes.

RIP Dede Whitwood. I had a feeling that this wasn't going to go well.
And FUCK YOU Glassman and Company who had the nerve to put up a shit about liability waivers on the same fucking day as the death of someone who had to drink your fucking Kool-Aid. I hope you dickwads get sued by the family and the State of NY, fucking @fit.

AFAIK yes. The increased BP during her workout was almost certainly the proximal cause, but that doesn't mean if she hadn't showed up that day she'd have been fine; the tissue wall was already weakened, and if it hadn't somehow been diagnosed and repaired before it ruptured, it would've happened eventually, whether during squats, a snatch test, or simply out of the blue.GoDogGo! wrote:Maybe SAR or JudoB can elaborate better, but AFAIK if you've got a predisposition to an AA and have been growing one for a while, you can blow from any/none activity. You can blame exercise for this, technically speaking, but realistically that's wrong and blaming her specific program is almost certainly wrong.
Re: The couch thread
She died doing what she loved, albeit misinformed, but when you die doing what you love, who gives a fuck about it being "right".
RIP

EXRX is a prescription in every legit university and certification program. @Fit has no use for it. This is how shit like this can happen (assuming she was diagnosed before joining the boxxx.
RIP for her and it should probably be RIP for that affiliate IMO.

You're probably right, but the fact is that if someone keels over in the middle of your gym, in the middle of your rxed workout, and subsequently dies, someone, maybe several someones, from aggrieved family members to insurance companies are going to look for a way to assign the blame to you and your gym.

And it's not exactly like Couchfit has a sterling record of being pro-active with regards to injury prevention and general safety, either.WildGorillaMan wrote:You're probably right, but the fact is that if someone keels over in the middle of your gym, in the middle of your rxed workout, and subsequently dies, someone, maybe several someones, from aggrieved family members to insurance companies are going to look for a way to assign the blame to you and your gym.

This. @F wasn't the direct cause, but it certainly sped up the process. The needs for aging people DO differ from Olympic athletes, Couch. Re: The couch thread
It's amazing. There's a thread on the @fit forums (http://board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?p=756680) and only two posts total on this. Despite how "evil" IGx is, there are more condolences for Dede and her family here than over there. You'd think that @fitters (especially vocal ones who can never seem to shut the fuck up on anything) would feel for this woman. But they're probably too busy in-front of a mirror taking pictures of themselves, hoping to get onto the @fit homepage or even here for us to ridicule them. Any attention is good attention to the attention whore. Fucking assholes.Gin Master wrote:This. @F wasn't the direct cause, but it certainly sped up the process. And CrossFit Geneseo has disappeared off of the internets. Blogger page is gone and so is the Facebook page. Affiliates page has them listed, but the link obviously goes nowhere.
