Well, since you asked:
Death
Permanent kidney damage
Permanent muscle damage
SLAP tears
Meniscal tears
Herniated discs
Rotator cuff tears
etc. etc. etc.
You forgot to mention the "injury du jour", the infamous ruptured achilles tendon.

Don't forget kids, all of these injuries are the result of bad coaching, not bad programming. The system is perfect. The logic is undeniable.

I'd be willing to bet that Band-Aid is intended to be like that worn by Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction, similar to "Pipehitter" being a reference to Pulp Fiction.

I'd Hit It wrote:They are indeed out. Interesting you interpret my response as sour grapes, shouldn't I be complaining that totals should be lower, not higher than they already are? My anger is not directed at the excellent international women's lifters we have, my anger is because we don't have enough of them compared to men and thus we're relegated to celebrating totals (132kg at 58kg) that in the scheme of things are nothing special. And by celebrating those totals, and setting our totals low to encourage participation, we create low standards and contentment among girls and women who think that they're doing a great job just because they qualified for the too-low totals at Nationals. I would like to see Nationals be the sort of competition only people who have been training for years and/or are genetic freaks get into. I would like an aggressive recruitment program and many young girls with fierce dreams of the Olympic podium. It is a damned shame that we miss so many strong women with so much potential because we only caught them in their 20s or 30s, and even more of a shame when those women waste the potential they have left with Crossfit and cross-training because USAW is terrified that if we tell a woman she's not good enough she'll run away crying instead of rising to the challenge.
So they are. Thank you for posting.
The most recent US Weightlifting medals won at the Olympics were Tara Nott Cunningham (Gold) and Cheryl Haworth (Bronze) at Sydney. So on a per capita basis the women we do have lifting have been producing higher results than the men.

You are proposing a tough row to hoe by raising standards when the talent pool is already pretty shallow. I've always thought that if weightlifting could crossover to be an NCAA sport that would help increase participation a lot. Many other Oly sports are also NCAA sports, so I don't really see what the problem is.

Absent other resources, Crossfit has been very good for USAW in membership, competition at the masters level and for getting more people to simply try the sport. This generation of Xfitters are going to be largely social lifters, but if they get their kids involved then there will be another pool to draw from. Otherwise, we have only the few succesful regional programs to draw from and many of those may go away when the coaches who set up and run those programs retire or die. There are something like 80 Xfit affiliates here in CO but only about 250 USAW members for the whole state. Wesley Weightlifting Team has almost that many members in a state (MO) that is only a little bigger in population than CO.

The aggressive recruiting you want? Well that has always been at the grass roots level. John Coffee in rural Georgia consistently produces a good percentage of the best female lifters in the country, five Olympians I think and over a dozen National Championships. If you've met John you might well wonder to yourself how the hell he does it, but he does it year after year.

If you want to see more aggressive recruitment done, it will for the foreseeable future be up to those who actually roll up their sleeves and get it done.

Sorry for the cranky response in my first reply.

Would you like to comment on the condition of the live-in lifters at the Colorado Springs facility, Randy? I heard that old Pole broke many of them.
Yeah touchy. My bad. Mixed bag of results for friends at the Nationals this weekend. Was upset about a bad result when I (mis) read I'd Do Her's post.

There aren't that many resident WL athletes at the OTC for that old Pole to break. 3-4 at the moment, I think. A few months ago Natalie Burgener had to have her hip scoped for a labral tear from squatting. That's the only injury I've heard about and I think Natalie said it happened before she got back to the Springs to train with Zygmunt. I think he has done really well handling Zach Krych's continued comeback. Everyone speaks very highly of him but they do say he pushes them hard. Lots of tumbling and jumping too. I went down for a day to observe him working with one of my college athletes and it was a coaching lesson for me as well as a very positive learning experience for my lifter.

Apparently, word on the street is that one of the Games events will involve swimming. So much for the garage gym mystique.

This is called the parallel universe of irony. You can ony grasp this if you look in a mirror at yourself holding another mirror while thinking of a Planck's Constant Tramp Stamp after 9 oz of Gin consumed in 3 seconds.

From the Reebok-Crossfit store thread. Lots of Crossfitters complaining about the prices and the loss of their beloved TapOut-like shirts. HQ responds with their normal professionalism.

I've been teaching an Ex Phys class for a personal trainer program here locally.

This book:
Image
has a big highlighted section devoted to "Exertional Rhabdomyolysis".

Well, if exercise scientists can't contribute anything of value to sports and fitness, at least couch can be truly happy that he has brought proper academic attention of the exercise scientists to the problems his program has created.

From one of the references used in that section...sound like characteristics of any exerciser group you might have heard of?
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?term=12972868
INTRODUCTION: Numerous cases of exertional rhabdomyolysis have been reported in the literature, and these cases mostly involve individuals who were inexperienced exercisers, uneducated in fitness and health principles, dehydrated or heat stressed, taking drugs, or military recruits in basic training.
