Nook ereader color
For the last week almost everything I have posted has been with the nook. Its a laptop / ereader / IM device all in 1. I currently have @ 500 books and monthly magazines come directly to it. National Geagraphic looks great on it. I have downloaded a bunch of childrens books and the nook will read them to the kids. My 3yo has already figured it out. Great device and a lot of torrent sites to get free books from. Well worth the money.

I have heard bad things about the color screen vs. the old e-ink screen, BUT:
for you hackery types, the Nook has now been rooted and hacked so that it runs Android. (Actually it was running it the whole time but you couldn't put Android apps on it before.) Essentially it can be turned into a cheap tablet computer.

The color screen is great. The only drawback is no flash player. It will play youtube though.

Dunno, haven't looked. Instead I'm going to be playing with the Insignia Infocast, on sale at Best Buy. It's actually a Chumby, running a version of Linux.Norman U. Senchbau wrote:Danke. None of this I know. This is what happens when you sell out to the Beast.GoDogGo! wrote:Dunno, haven't looked. Instead I'm going to be playing with the Insignia Infocast, on sale at Best Buy. Re: Nook ereader color
My 16 year old son loves this thing.
Re: Nook ereader color
A guy at the local hackerspace got a Nook color and promptly rooted it. It's now an Android tablet running whatever Android apps he cares to put on it. There's even a Kindle reader app available in case you have a "source" of Kindle books as well as B&N and Google books.
He said the process was dead easy and took about 15 min.
I got my wife the WiFi black and white version, which she loves.

Rooting his new Nook...almost sounds dirty.GoDogGo! wrote:A guy at the local hackerspace got a Nook color and promptly rooted it.
Can an ordinary idiot perform that act? Are there online instructions?
Re: Nook ereader color
All over the Net. I'd recommend reading all of the different versions of instructions just to make sure that there aren't steps left out.johno wrote:Rooting his new Nook...almost sounds dirty.GoDogGo! wrote:A guy at the local hackerspace got a Nook color and promptly rooted it.

Re: Nook ereader color
Things like the Nook, android phones and the new android tablets can be "rooted" - Android is a lite version of unix, and rooting gives you root access tot eh Operating System.
Rooted android phones can run apps the phone company does not want you to run.
Rooting a Nook does basically turn it into a tablet with access to many applications from the android market. I don't know if the Nook has the built in accelerometers or GPS for some apps, but for some things, it could be a good wifi tablet device.

What apps might those be? I've got a Droid phone, and haven't thought of a reason to root it (yet).j-cubed wrote:Rooted android phones can run apps the phone company does not want you to run.
Don’t believe everything you think.
Re: Nook ereader color
Rooting the Nook opens it up to any Android app, so you're not restricted to the apps sold by B&N, (which in some cases may have free non B&N versions.)j-cubed wrote: Rooted android phones can run apps the phone company does not want you to run.

The Nook has no camera or real multi-axis accelerometer, but I do believe that it has a tilt sensor.

The most popular apps are wifi hotspot. With Sprint, if you want to use your phone as a wifi hotspot, they want to charge like $30 a month. Or you can root your phone and download a wifi hotspot (I use one named Barnacle)nafod wrote:What apps might those be? This has come in handy when I've been traveling and needed quick internet access for my laptop.

Re: Nook ereader color
Purchased a Color Nook.
First thing I did was down load and install the Nook OS 1.2. This gave me flash capability and some other functions like e-mail.
I'm going to play with it for a while and this next Friday I'm going to Root it. I haven't decided what method I'm going to use yet.
For $199.00 (remanufactured) on B&N ebay store the Color Nook is the IMO the best Android tabet on the Market. While not perfect, it does a decent job as a internet reader. In IGx fashion I tested it out downloading porn vid files with no problems. As with all WiFi devices, your speed and internet experience will depend upon your WiFi and internet provider connection.
I just couldn't bring myself to hand over twice to four times as much $$$ to Apple. Nor was I impressed by other manufactures Android based tablets. Just as expensive as the entry level Ipad and no where as good. The Color Nook is in my opinion the best buy out of the whole bunch.
I give it two thumbs up.
