This is funny.

One of fb friends just got really ticked off at me and accused me of being a racist for thinking that the George Zimmerman ruling was fair.

I told him that he was a racist for thinking that black people were too stupid to know better than to pick a fight with a total stranger who may or may not have a weapon. I teach my children that same lesson. Ie, NOT to fuck with strangers because they may or may not have a weapon.

I think that this kid made a big stupid mistake, probably related more to the fact that he was a teenager and teenagers do stupid things. And I'm sorry he's dead, its a huge tragedy. For real, I can't imagine the grief his parents are going through. It would kill me.

But, I don't think it was a huge big white racist conspiracy.

Apparently, according to the mob beatdown, I believe this because I am a middle class white woman.

As a libby libster (or whatever Darth calls us), I kind of hate some of my fellow libby libsters right now.

Personally, I wanted it to go the other way for an array of reasons.

Logistically, and in accordance with the law and the evidence presented, Not Guilty was the only verdict that should have come out of the case.

The jury got it right, and that makes me happy, but that doesn't change the fact that this was a tragedy from beginning to end.

Exactly what I said. However, it seems like a lot of people are hung up on the original media version of the story and didn't pay attention to the trial.

A black kid in a hoodie, who wasn't doing anything illegal, got racially profiled and that ended up escalating into him being killed. I don't know about white guilt but there certainly is nothing to have pride about here.

I'm not sure why people are upset now as opposed to when they first heard of the SYG law. The law is what made his actions defensible, not the jury.

Nobody's pissed at the law still, outside of some feigned outrage that a black woman ran to her car and started shooting in a house full of kids got sent away for "standing her ground".

The Snowden case and the Patriot Act is sort of the same thing (though nobody seems to really care about either).

Wrong. SYG was never an issue in the trial. This was a traditional self defense case, and the relevant laws (excluding weapons laws) are similar in all states.

Syaigh, it's always nice to see that some liberals still think people are innocent until proven guilty.

Meanwhile in Chicago, 16 black kids bite the dust by gunshot over the weekend.

I don't want a court system that determines its verdicts by media influenced public opinion.

Who has said they are proud that some kid got killed? Of course there is nothing to be proud about... fuck. That doesn't mean that GZ should go to jail though. The kid was absolutely profiled, but not because GZ hated blacks, but because his neighborhood had been repeatedly vandalized with numerous break ins and thefts by black teenage boys. And that their confrontation escalated into a fight is an unknown as to who "started it". GZ, as a man carrying a gun, should have known better than to get into a situation where he needed to use it but in his defense he thought he was dealing with a possible vandal and wanted to protect his home and neighbors. At the same time I doubt that the overweight GZ chased down and tackled the 17 yo football athlete, so the decision to enter into confrontation was also made by TM. Since the end goal of any physical conflict is bodily harm/death GZ escalated the fight to the highest level. The real tragedy is that the kid was probably to young to realize the ramifications of entering into physical confrontation with another but just as with young kids driving cars to fast and not fully understanding the consequences, not understanding does not change the end result.

A tragedy all around, but not one that has anything to do with racism, just the overconfidence of youth and the false bravado of the insecure.
