For when either people are working remotely, or the IT guys are working remotely, and someone has computer issues. The story I got was that it allows them to VPN in (I think that's the term) and take control of someone's computer for a bit to fix it.

The advice I got was that people should download it onto their computers just long enough to get the issue fixed, and then get rid of it so that no one can use it to access your system. The IT guy said that he keeps it on a disk, and uploads it each time he needs to fix an issue.

I hope I described it right. Just wondering if it's worth letting my guys know about, or if it's not worth the risk/reward tradeoff.

i used it couple times to help wife with computer.

The Mrs. prefers join.me (that's as the it person)

I use logmein to remotely access my store computers, I leave it installed. Anyone wanting to access the computer remotely would need my username and password for logmein, then the 10 letter/number key to get into the computer via logmein, then the password for the sensitive programs.

I guess you'd have to judge based on the type of work you do as to whether it's worth the risk. Or rather, if there's any real risk to begin with.

I've used both logmein and TeamViewer, depending on who I've helped or who's helped me and based on preference. I kept both on my computer, but then again, I don't really do anything that's of a sensitive nature.

I work for a software company that makes advanced software used in manufacturing. We have a special license of Team Viewer and actually include it with our software. It allows us to handle phone support much easier.

To the best of my knowledge we can only take control of anothers computer if they allow it, and not at any time.

We also have used it for online training and online demonstrations.

If you want something that is free and doesn't require any prep by the user, join.me is my first choice followed by showmypc and teamviewer. I would consider join.me, which is run by logmein.com, as the most trustwothy company.

If you are willing to pay and want something a hair more streamlined gotoassist is probably the best I have found. It is part of Citrix which I consider a solid company. They also make gotomypc and gotomeeting, related products and also excellent.

If you want remote control capabilities for windows machines the built in remotedesktop is imo head and shoulders above all of the above add ons. It isn't something for impromptu screen sharing support but if you want to ready machines in advance for remote control, it's dead solid, better speed and clarity, handles multiple monitors properly, etc.

I use Teamviewer to remote into my work PCs from home and from my home PCs to work (instead of the supplied Juniper/Dameware combo work supplies for on call). (If I have to remote into another user's PC on my work domains instead of my own from home, I go ahead and use Juniper and Dameware). This does mean I leave it running in the background all the time...but all my PCs at home and work are behind routers and firewalls anyway, no one is likely to "stumble on" to my sessions.

I can and have also run it from a phone or a tablet, but that's not really practical given the tiny viewing ability and haptic keyboards for most phones and tablet. Laptops work much better for what I do.

The free version works fine for what it does. I've never had a problem with it. I only have to put up with an occasional plug for the premium product when I sign off.

I agree that for a one time technician remote (especially from a software vendor) fix, Join.me or GotoMeeting is a better choice, and the vendor will just give you a site to log into for that and request that you allow his ID to take over the cursor and keyboard.

I work remotely and our IT guy uses TeamViewer when he has to get intimate with my laptop from HQ. Free version.

Teamviewer works very well for remote access. Buuutttt....I have only used it once but I have massive security concerns because it allows the code recipient to gain total access to your machine, and then does not appear to generate a new code once the session has ended. This could lead to all kinds of shenanigans. I immediately deleted once I was finished.

If you are looking for simple free solutions join.me (which someone else mentioned) and Mikogo both work very well. Join.me works for PC and MAC.
