I've recently doubled my training clients by serving this need. Thing is, they are great folks. I really like them.

Two Sundays ago I did my first Strongman and there were 20 novices and about sixty or so total competitors.
A lot of Crossfitters, especially among the novices. And I'm embarrassed to say that a lot of them were stronger than me.
I quit my crappy gym and found a new place to train.

We have a guy at our gym who has pretty strong competitive aspirations in CF. He's a really, really great guy, very humble, and wholly bereft of the usual douchery associated with competitive CFers. He's made mention a couple of times that he wants to put 30-40 lbs on his squat but always finds some way to politely disregard my suggestions (all of which basically have boiled down to 'pick a good plan and do it').

Couple of weeks ago he met a CFer at a local competition whose squat is a good 100-125 lbs less than mine (and mine is not very good to begin with so...) who said "oh, you should do Smolov." Wham. Sold. The suggestion came wearing knee socks and kinesio tape, ergo...

He mentions this to me and says he also wants to up his press. "Well...you probably shouldn't layer too much on top of Smolov...you know, it's the squat cycle, but maybe do some doubles and triples during your warmup and see if you can't nudge it up with frequency." He sort of nods but I can see the confusion setting in and I get that he really wants me to tell him to do more reps.

Fast forward to day one on Smolov and he's got about seven press sets of six-to-eight reps lined up on the board. Le sigh. I feel like this sort of encapsulates for me what is wrong with most true believers--an almost allergic reaction to stuff that hasn't been vetted by the machine, and the desire to always, forever and a day, be doing more instead of doing better.
In the mill, getting down.

It is epidemic at that effective age (generational age adjusted for media exposure and absence of father figure).

We got an aspiring strongman who simply will not learn a god damn thing. He's got a top 5 ASM finisher, a multiple time national HW competitor and a guy who trained under Doyle Fucking Kenady telling him the same thing and it's full throttle on the events then full throttle on the bottle. He's a fucking dolt. None of his training partners pull under 600 and he's nibbling at 5 listening to douche
bags on lift big eat big.

I am lucky in that I have attained crabby old eccentric guru status in my area. I lecture them all at the outset as to why they are wrong and their lack of success is directly related to their lack of judgment. And then I do a lot of casual name dropping, talk about how my nine year old son has a twice body weight deadlift, and then look off into the distance as if having deep thoughts about the future. This gets me the respect I need to remold their thinking. :)

Surprised there's not a non-compete clause in Budding's employment agreement or separation package.
Thank you all for the overwhelming support for my last post. I can't tell you how much it means to me. The new project is coming together at lightning speed (even surprising me how fast it's moving!). Here are a few details.

As I said before, I'm launching a production company (Stalwart Sports & Entertainment, Inc.) whose mission is to produce mainstream content in the functional fitness space. Our first project is a massive one: The National Pro Fitness League.

We're converting team competitions into a mainstream sporting event that is fan, TV, and sponsor friendly. Picture two 8-person teams (4 men, 4 women, with one of each being over 40 years old) going head to head in matches throughout a season that is not unlike an abbreviated NFL season. Two-hour matches with fixed rules that are flexible and designed to force teams to strategize. A very smart team that executes flawlessly could outwit a fitter team any given match. There will be substitutions on the fly, consistent structure for each match, and all events known ahead of time.

The teams (like in the NBA, NFL, etc) will be privately owned, for-profit franchises. They will sign and pay the athletes. They will be based in a particular city, so Boston will play New York, etc., but like other pro sports, anyone could be hired onto any team as long as the contract is legit. There will be league revenue sharing on top of local events and merchandise, so they could end up being quite profitable entities.

The league matches will start in mid/late August 2014, and be aired live in the US on a national sports network (we'll also work international rights deals, but don't know when that will start). The first year will be an abbreviated season, and 2015 will start the full schedule. Of course, we'll also have a robust website that will produce quality content year-round using the athletes, teams and coaches from the league as the primary focus.

All told, this combination will provide sponsors with the most consistent, comprehensive, and integrated exposure to the functional fitness community.

This thread is almost entirely about how CF is run by a bunch of chucklefucks and you're surprised that they didn't have the smarts to get a proper contract written?

Hell, they probably had Dale Saran write it.

I never really paid any attention to a lot of the personalities in the CF world, but I got through about 10 minutes of that interview. That's the kind of inane nonsense conversation I would have with someone while splitting an 8 ball. It's like he was just making it up on the spot. Also, that podcast interviewer and his fake laugh was really getting on my nerves. I'd hate myself if I had to sit there and entertain that bullshit.

If I ever was into an eightball and ANYONE present started discussing fitness levels and leagues wherein fitness is to be contested I would punch everyone there and then mace myself for commiserating with such choads.

Crossfit cult is tired of being ridiculed, so they're going to try and take a shot at the imaginary bros.

LOL, the average gym body builder type (that only works his arms and chest) would ass rape the average @fitter.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

Kipping triceps extensions? Geez. Well let them make fun of things that strengthen ones joints. This is why outsourcing ones training is becoming more and more popular for cf box dwellers.

funny part of that video is that they can't be original. Broscience has that shit on lock already and only after his @fit one did you see this pop up.

plus, they kip pullups, form is shit half the time and to make fun of some douchebag in the gym with bad form has been done 1000 times already.

I am looking forward to these hypocritical videos when they can't even keep form solid in their own ranks.

They create a derivative parody that isn't anywhere near as amusing as videos of actual CrossFitters doing actual CrossFit. Sad.

Danny Broflex is the biggest Dom Mazzeti rip-off ever, it's not even going to be funny, the whole thing will just be a colossal CrossFit Circle jerk trying to work the tension out of their shoulders after a day of sumo deadlift high pulling each others knobs.

The Upper East Side’s EVF Performance announced earlier this fall that they’d be opening a second, swankier CrossFit box near Columbus Circle. Now, they’ve revealed that the new space will also include Row House, a studio dedicated to rowing-based group fitness classes.

“I’ve been noticing the rowing trend build as CrossFit has been building,” says EVF owner Eric Von Frohlich, who’s opening the space with his wife, Debra. “There are people who want the benefits of CrossFit but are a little intimidated by the barbells and the skill set required. Rowing really hits a much larger section of the population, and it’s safe, efficient, and effective.”

Others would agree with him. New York’s seen the launch of three new rowing-based fitness brands in the past year—Brooklyn Crew, Throwback Fitness, and CityRow. EVF’s Row House will be the fourth. While the CrossFit floor at EVF is expected to open around January 1, Debra says Row House will most likely debut the weekend of January 12 or 19, with free demo classes.

The three types of Row House classes will include lots of intervals on the rowing machine. In Row House Cardio, you’ll also do cardio-based calisthentics like burpees and jumping rope; in Row House Core, expect planks galore; and for Row House Full Body you’ll encounter weights like kettlebells and resistance training like squats and push-ups. Classes will be capped at 10–15 people and have the motivating music and exciting vibe of a boutique class, say the Von Frohlichs.
NYC- where the boneheads don't realize that for a few month's dues, they could have a C2 in their own apartment. But I forget, it's all about the "community".
