I like Blauer's stuff. There are simularities to what he does with some things we do.
Of the SD coarses out there I actually think his is one of the better ones for those not dedicated to long term MA study.
That said it's disappointing to see him hook up with this movement.
Sure he could probably make the point that he's teaching what he always has and whether CF is BS, in between or great, it's a moot point and does not change what he teaches and CF gives him a big group of people to interest in SD in general and a group of people that tend to follow their cool kids so he can make a lot of money for himself. (got no issue for being paid for teaching your system, many of the same that bitch about people making money in MA do jobs that contribute nothing to anyone but money).
But it's fucking CouchFit and it does spill some douche on him.

Blauer is a One Trick Pony. But it's a very useful trick.

Re: The couch thread
Interesting that the video did not note any actual sparring in the course. Maybe that was dropped as it would put perfect noses and hair at risk. Additionally, sparring risks validating the fact that it takes more than a weekend course to build proficiency.
Hand to hand systems that cannot safely be sparred, or choose not to incorporate sparring, may be useful for developing defensive traits but do little to increase the overall capability of an individual to defend themselves.

Watched a Shark Tank rerun this morning, Daymond John (the black guy who founded FUBU) said that he'd opened five Crossfit gyms lately and "you know how hard it is to get certified in Crossfit."
Re: The couch thread
Trained a while back with a couple of military guys who were pretty hard up with Blauer. Beastly to train with, and while they were not they didn't have a lot of finesse, they certainly could get the job done. The SPEAR stuff went well with the RAT curriculum that my sensei liked to work with most security folks.Ed Zachary wrote:I believe Soupbone said he's one of the most vicious people he's trained with.johno wrote:Blauer is a One Trick Pony. As to Blauer joining up with crossfit to make some bones, I can't argue. It's where the money is at. I've done a seminar at a box on GS and walked away with some nice pocket change. If I could milk those saps for more, I would in a fucking heartbeat.

Hasn't Tony Blauer been involved with @Fit for like close to 10 years?

Yeah, not sure why this seems to be news to anyone. He was around when they were still working with Hackelman, IIRC.T200 wrote:Hasn't Tony Blauer been involved with @Fit for like close to 10 years?

Lots of rhabdo reports coming in from WOD 14.5, from seasoned CFers even. But, you know, its the individual's responsibility to know not to fuck themselves up . . .

Look, it's everybody's personal responsbility to know exactly how much work they can do and go no further, despite what their coaches or bystanders might be yelling at them. The responsibility is purely personal. KNOW THYSELF.syaigh wrote:Lots of rhabdo reports coming in from WOD 14.5, from seasoned CFers even. And everybody must participate in the Open, no matter what, as it's an inspirational opportunity to try your hardest against the eleeeeetest in the world. NO LIMITS.
It's amazing how they think they can have it both ways.

Re: The couch thread
The Open shit really rankles (although it also amuses). Not one day after the last workout I saw something on FB about how it's okay if you didn't do the Open, CrossFit isn't really just about the Games. WHAT? For two straight fucking months all we heard was it's the best thing in the world (but hey, pay your $20) and you can do the same workout Rich Froning is doing (gotta pay your $20), and that is something that is available in no other fitness system worldwide...for $20.
And then poof, it's not that big a deal? Come on.

every year I hear "fuck the Open, I'm not paying" in September, then "HOLY SHIT, ITS THE OPEN! LETS pARTY, this IS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!" in Jan.
Re: The couch thread
206,335 people signed up for the mens and women's non-masters divisions.
181,844 did the first workout.
133,695 finished the open.
72,640 drop outs x $20 = $1,452,800.
Pretty picture of it:
Fuck.

Glassman's constitution is far too weak for real drugs or pussy.
