Bogatyr's home remedies for poison ivy/oak?

Post by Bob Wildes »

I have a bad case of the shite. I tries baking soda and water paste which seems to have helped. Also baths with clorox bleach and
baking soda which also seems to have helped.

Any other tries and true remedies from you bogatyrs?

You've gotta scrub it until it bleeds then use the clorox.

My mom advises the use of oatmeal, and every time I've used it on poison ivy it's worked like a charm.

The Tecnu products are pure gold. They used to be hard to find, you can get them at most drug stores now. I am told washing off with Tecnu was daily SOP for linemen down south, who'd be hacking through the shit daily.

The soap is very good for getting the stubborn oil off of you, that's at least half the battle. They had an excellent gel to put on the rash, too, but I can't figure out if they still make it or changed the name or what.

Oatmeal baths are good. Never wash in hot water, make it as cool or cold as you can stand it. Hot water bonds the oils to your skin. Washing with Fels Naptha soap was good also. If you're out somewhere and get exposed and a cold shower isn't going to happen in the next hour or so, spray on WD40(not in eyes) and wipe off with rag or paper towels. It helps to remove the oils. Once you're covered in the outbreak, go to Dr. and get a shot (steroid?) to shorten the misery.

This, though I recommend Epsom salt as opposed to Clorox. Grew up in the woods of Alabama/Georgia and I've used this method since I was a kid. Works wonders.

Thanks for all the replies. They all were helpful.

I've had the shot twice and it works pretty fast.

The Technu and WD-40 technique are something I'm going to pursue next,

I never had this stuff until I was 35 and thought I couldn't get it. Boy Scout and playing "Army" as a kid
and Marine grunt work at Camp Lejeune with several deployments to include three weeks at Fort Sherman.

Legit Bogatyrs can wipe their asses with poison ivy or oak with nary a fear of the slightest itch.

One modification, NEVER use epsom salt in a tub bath if you have the itching hemorrhoids. Of course, maybe Y'all use a butt plug to block that.

If you're really miserable with the rash, oral corticosteroids can knock it out fast. It's not medicine to be trifled with but I don't think a Medrol pack one in a blue moon is going to hurt me. But I haven't had to resort to cortisone since discovering the Tecnu products. I think this one is the gel you want, after you wash it off with the Tecnu soap:

The tecnu original I bought yesterday morning seems to be helping.

This is not the worst case I've ever had, but it is in more places on my body than any outbreak in the past.

I'm washing my bed sheets daily and following the tecnu instructions.

If this isn't against the Geneva Convention it would be ideal to make the jihadis talk.

There is one thing you can do to make sure you never get it again, but it might kill you.

Eat it.

My stepmom's uncle did this as a kid when he heard it and nearly died from the reaction he got in his throat, but I'll be damned, he never got it again.

You are exactly right when the outbreak is extremely bad. The last time I had it before this
time was over a decade ago. One arm was dripping and oozing and one side of my face
blew up like balloon and the itching was agonizing. I didn't waste any time seeing my
GP and getting the shot.

That GP has long since retired and I am using the VA now for once a year check ups. I
doubt that they would respond fast for a case of poison ivy. The oozing seems to be gone and
both arms and parts of both legs have scabbed over. That has always been the sign that the worst
is over in the past.

Once again I say thanks for all the suggestions. :finga:
