Re: Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard
Rally the Herd is about perception as well of behavior, such as: Seeding a tip jar with cash. I used to do this when I worked at a pizza place. If I put 5-10$ in at the start of my shift vs. leaving it empty, I'd usually make 20$+ as opposed to 5-10$. People would tip more based on the perception th...

Re: Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard
While it's not a seamless comparison, I thought about the super-ego element before I posted and I see it as very similar in the sense that they are both internalized mechanisms of social reference. The superego is the grafting on to our own conscience the values of the group, the path is the grafti...

Re: Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard
I've never "got" Freud or the concept of the ego/superego/id.
But looking at it on wikipedia, I can see ego and id corresponding to rider and elephant, but the superego does not equate to the path.

Haha, Freud's a weirdo

Switch: How to Change When Change is Hard
http://www.amazon.com/Switch-Change-Things-When-Hard/dp/0385528752/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315765341&sr=8-1 Great book. The central point of this book is that our behavior is controlled and affected by 3 main things. 1. The Rider -- this is our analytical side. This is the side that says I'm...

I bought it, thought it was a waste of money. The ideas of traveling to the places (the Congo, Chernobyl, etc) were cool, but like a nice looking meal with no substance I didn't feel like I got much out of it

Protobuilder is a rude poster, but his response is to my original review, and it prompted me to re-write it.

You Are Not A Gadget by Jaron Lanier
I'm gonna re-do my review: This is a book about the trade-offs we under go when using technology, particularly computers: the loss of privacy the loss of peoples ability to generate money off of their intellectual creations (such as music and writing) due to piracy and the movement towards making in...

Watched the first season last week on rental.
Gory and good characters, only one semi-dud of an episode (the CDC one was a little cheesy).
Highly recommended

Countdown to Zero
Documentary on nuclear weapons and the movement to eliminate them.
Fairly good, but my interest waned a few times and it was a little heavy on the "people on the street" opinion for my liking.

The Wave by Susan Casey
Great book. About giant waves -- surfers who ride them, ocean goers who have to deal with them and the scientists and researchers who try to predict and deal with them. The book is mostly (two thirds perhaps) surfing related, which was fine with me as I go surfing and find it interesting. She also w...

People go crazy and take over a small town. Since they're just crazy they can do shit like drive and shoot guns.

I think I'll pick up his book then. I read Yasser Seirawan's "Play Winning Chess" and liked it:
But haven't read any other chess books yet.

Re: Impact Sport Electronic Earmuff
Picked up two sets to walk around with, not for shooting purposes. Fun for just bullshitting in, but they get drowned out by heavy noise: wind especially.
Was at work with them on and could clearly hear a jackhammer, but none of my coworkers could hear it without them. Ninja shit.

I'll look into Elephant. I had nightmares after finishing the book, don't know if I want more negativity in my life for a lil bit.
