Roe v Wade over turned
This is trolling, right? I hope so. Of course not. According to the CDC, something on the order of 12-15,000 women have died ss a result of pregnancy or delivery complications in the US, in the 21st Century . According to CDC tracking , from 2011-4, the leading causes were: Cardiovascular diseases,...

Roe v Wade over turned
Every state had laws restricting abortion when Roe was handed down. In 1972 the Court invented a new right without basis in either the Constitution, precedent, or common law. Really? By what right does the government require a woman to incur the medical risks (preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, bi...

Re: It's a Wonderful Life
The movie's amazing before Clarence jumps in the river. It's just about the most amazing "slice of life" movie of the 30s & 40s we've ever had. I don't really give a shit about the third act and the alternate history part: but I watch with close attention everything up until then. That...

Re: Louis CK: Sincerely
Thanks for the review, been idly wondering about maybe buying it. I've bought things from him in the past. Covers his scandal throughout in an somewhat apologetic but slightly defiant manner-- not even close to the apology that people are demanding. I think that's fucked up. He's the only one of the...

Re: Right now I'm reading
I started it when my stepdaughter started it, when she was in high school. Middle school? I'm gonna say high school.
Got stuck about 50 or 100 pages in, haven't finished it. She just got her Masters.

Re: Wu Flu
How so? Do Republicans tend to run the most crowded areas in the US? Turd, you got any reading you can recommend to a libtard who wants to learn pro's & con's of single-payer health care proposals? The simplistic view is, if the NHS can work in the UK, and whatever Canada has can work for them,...

Re: Right now I'm reading
Just finished The Honourable Schoolboy by John le Carré (1977). It's the sequel to Tinker-Tailor-Soldier. The first le Carré I've ever read. First ~50 pages or so I thought the prose was crazy ; very weird style. Then I caught on or something, and was hooked. Devastating ending. Been on a spy kick s...

Re: Right now I'm reading
Here is my theory. Many artists owe their success to both their talent as well as those around them who are able to channel the talent. Editors, publishers, agents, directors, etc. There are people who act as natural brakes and curb these artists worse tendencies. Stephen King was an author who spe...

Re: Remakes That Are Better Than The Originals
As a standalone song. In the context of the album, which is a little folkish, the original works better.

Re: Wu Flu
Interesting tidbit in the thread: a fabric mask that would otherwise be ineffective, if you soak it in salt solution and then let it dry, it becomes very effective. Something about the salt penetrating the viral contaminate as it passes, and recrystallizing, destroying it. https://www.nature.com/art...

TLDR: Deaths heavily concentrated among the old and sick; China's draconian quarantine measures have likely been effective. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2762130?guestAccessKey=bdcca6fa-a48c-4028-8406-7f3d04a3e932&utm_source=For_The_Media&utm_medium=referral&utm_camp...

Detective novels! Loved the movie Knives Out. Saw it with the wife and 10yo (his review: Captain America makes the movie); then took my mom & stepdaughter to see it a couple weeks later. Gave me a yen for some old-style locked-room whodunnit action. While stepD was home for break, she & I wa...

Range by David Epstein. Highly enjoyable. Got through the first 40 pages or so, and it seemed he was just making the same point over and over. A good point, but a bit repetitive. Did you find it broke this pattern as you continued? I don't really remember: but probably not. The thing you're describ...

Two track. Three-ish chapters of the OT and slower through the NT. I like the two track for variety's sake, especially reading it before bed. I'm a history teacher, so reading the King James is almost professional development for European history. For the OT, you may want to consider reading the bo...
