Re: Excellent discussion of the McCloskey firearm prosecution in St Louis

It's been understood to be fundamental for some time. Haven't you ever seen the bit in a western where the sheriff faces off against the angry crowd and vows that the obviously guilty hombre is going to get a fair trial no matter how much they want to hang him right now? The delegitimization of priv...

It's seeming pretty well established, though no news source is going to admit it, that deaths have been and are being overcounted. No big time journalist is going to admit this officially until after the election, I wager. Wouldn't want to hurt President Harris's chances.

Re: Excellent discussion of the McCloskey firearm prosecution in St Louis

And the reason I say the state is less harsh is pretty pragmatic. Individuals lack the resources to use imprisonment as a punishment, and so historically have just 3 options. Take the other's property, maim them, or kill them. What if the offender owns nothing? Sorry, two options only.

Re: Excellent discussion of the McCloskey firearm prosecution in St Louis

It is this larger necessity for the rule of law, and the consequences if the state will not act to maintain it that is behind comments like that, Benny. The state seeking and punishing lawbreakers being better than the uncertain but almost always harsher personal vengeance is a realization of civili...

Re: Excellent discussion of the McCloskey firearm prosecution in St Louis

There's a weird meme on the conservative circuit about "police are REALLY there to protect criminals from citizens". Lame. I don't get it. Is this what conservatives believe? Police exist for multiple reasons. They started for fine collecting to increase revenue. No one has ever cared abo...

I think they were tactically unsound but the general public is going to be more and more sympathetic to the McCloskey's if current trends continue. Exhibit A: https://denver.cbslocal.com/2020/09/13/robert-thompson-aurora-police-defend-stand-down-orders/ "AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – A CBS4 investigat...

The UVA hospital went to a 100% mandatory mask policy very very early on, so the town population is pretty used to it.

Re looting, NPR just profiled an author strongly defending it as a tactic. I read the piece, and there's little awareness thst only the super committed left are not put off by this. Zero pushback. Only insurance companies are hurt, small businesses being part of a community is a right wing myth, the...

Re: What to make of the election?

Something not often mentioned is that police uses of lethal force are are about half as frequent as they used to be and the time to charge when a cop is charged with a crime has shortened dramatically. Chauvin was charged in something like 72 hours. Is that a good thing? Depends. If he walks because...

Looking for trouble? Yeah, he'd have been better off staying home but anybody has a right to go to these protests, don't they? Don't know the gun laws there but wouldn't be surprised if he was outside of them carrying. The law is super-clear and he was clearly outside it. 18 to open carry. He's not...

Yeah the reviews seem to go both ways. Thought I’d at least give the first volume a try. He really likes to describe the environment though.

How far did you make it into the series?
I forget exactly, past midway.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but his cooking skill is not what made Bourdain a celebrity. Also there are so many people writing cookbooks....it's hard to really be original and new and good all at once.
