My AR-15 project

Post by Batboy2/75 »

Time to build an AR-15!

Just purchased one of these; CMMG AR-15 stripped lower receiver. I pick it up in 10 days.

One of the neat things about CA gun laws is that there are loop holes. One of which is if your magazine is fixed to the magazine well of the AR-15 and can only be removed using a tool; it doesn't fit the classification of an Assault rifle under CA law. You can have all of the evil and laughingly superficial items the socialist democratic gun grabbers try to scare the public with; pistol grip, flash suppressor (more on this item later), collapsible stock. BTW- a tool has been declared by CA courts to even extend to a single ammunition round.

The second thing to do is look at the CA list of banned so called "assault weapons". Since bureaucrats and legislators are lazy, they can't ID every manufacture of AR-15s. So there are plenty of legal AR-15 that you can buy if you're (1) willing to buy a stripped lower and build a CA legal AR-15 and (2) find a ffl dealer that sells stripped lower receivers in CA. As you can see above, I've found both.

So I'm going to purchase a third party item called a Bullet Button. Presto, an inserted 10 round mag is now non detachable! Not exactly what I want, but it will do. Plus, if the shit hit's the fan, the bullet button can be taken off and the regular magazine release reinstalled in a jiffy.

Once my lower receiver parts arrive. I'll post pics of the process. After that I'll decide what caliber I'm going pick for the upper receiver along with the upper receiver accessories and post pics as I complete the installs.

Now regarding flash suppressors or hiders. The Brady family and the gun grabbers would have you believe this little item hides the muzzle flash of the rifle so that OTHERS can not see it, particularly at night. The fact is, it does no such thing. It in fact it only suppresses the flash from the shooter, so as to help preserve the night vision of the shooters perspective. Everyone else can see the muzzle flash.

I'm feeling adventurous and thinking of completing this build as a 6.5 mm Grendel.

Alexander arms 18 inch barrel (I'll have the barrel threaded for a standard A2 flash suppressor)
Alexander arms stripped upper receiver
Rock river 2 stage trigger
Hogue pistol grip
Either a standard A2 stock or a Magpul PRS stock
Medium Four Railed floating Hand guards with covers
Troy detachable front and rear flip sites

If I go this route I'm going the full monty and do a complete upper receiver build. Everything, but the head space on the bolt and the barrel. I'll even probably even paint the damn thing with a nice hard resin type paint; since the upper and lower receiver won't match color wise.

The 2nd option is not as adventurous, but something I want to have.

A LMT 16 inch piston AR-15 upper. I'm waiting for a couple of quotes to come back so I can see how expensive ,and more importantly, how long I'll have to wait.

Thank you for the link, but I already own an M-4 style Direct impingement (regular AR gas system) carbine.

I'm going with another caliber like 6.5 mm or a gas piston 5.56 system. Once I find a CA FFL resource for AR-10 lower I'm going to build an AR-10.

MY build is now complete.

Pretty easy build. Didn't have the dollars to build the 6.5 grendel I wanted. So instead I built a piston style Ar-15

CMMG lower w/ flat railed top
DPMS lower trigger and lower kit
DPMS mil spec buffer tube and buffer
MAGpul MOE carbine stock
Mappul pistol grip
Magpul enlarged trigger guard
CA legal bullet button

CMMG upper receiver w/ piston and railed gas block
Magpul MBUS flip up rear and front sights

Upper, lower, quad free floting rail, and piston kit from CMMG. BTW-CMMG was a joy to work with. Owner promised me delivery in 2 weeks and I actually received it in 4 days. All other parts were ordered from Bravo Company USA. Both outfits were excellent and I will be using both them again in the future.

More pics to follow next week after I fire things up at the range.

Very cool to see this.
Where I grew up,, there were gunsmiths working in the garage or cabin's everywhere,.. Other states, not so much.
You still have to teach me that gun disarm Jet Li used on Mel Gibson's Beretta in Lethal Weapon 4. :-$

That gun would scare most of the ghetto population in my town. Maybe even more than a big dog without a leash on.

Thats a beautiful thing you have made there Bats.

Curious why the 6.5 Grendel was an option? Ammo cant be easy to come by out there for it. Was there a performance spec you wanted?

Is this the disarm that you are talking about. If so, I think Beretta fixed the issue in subsequent production but cool none the less.

You gonna check headspace? ARs are funny that way.. A set of "Go/No Go" gauges would be very helpful for you and if you got them I wish you'd mention it to everyone else.
