Suicide.
Third guy I know in less than two years.
This one hurt. I worked closely with the guy for six years, and spoke to him less than 2 weeks ago. He was down, but I certainly didn't see this coming.
The restaurant we worked in together had a fire two months ago, and he was looking at at least 6 more months of unemployment. He was bummed about not getting calls from resumes he was sending out.
I also know he was not happy at home, but this has to be more than that.
Lionel was one of the two or three best guys I've ever known, and would do anything for you. Did me quite a few real solid favors. I can't imagine how the guy I knew would do this to his two sons. It just doesn't make sense.

My dad did that at age 60.

You'll never, ever figure out why. It just sucks a little less over time.

Depression is a bitch.

A friend of mine had his older brother commit suicide by shot gun. Shocked everyone in his family, until they read his AA journal. Reading his journal, his family discovered a guy that was seriously depressed and felt all alone in the world. While family members knew he was having problems, he was able to hide how seriously he was depressed. Serious double edged sword of having to talk to someone, but not wanting to burden his family with his issues. Even if he did, and they listened, what he really need to do was talk with a professional therapist.

Had a friend attempt in college. The common thread always seems to be it didn't make sense at the time and was very difficult to detect. The ones who don't want to are the only ones who announce it.

GBM, I'm sorry you lost your friend.

I encounter suicide in my job, and there's no explaining it. They are some of the hardest calls to shake.

Sorry to hear that. We lost a friend like that last Christmas. He was a very energetic, happy man, who raised money for all kinds of charities and was a pillar of the community. He also fought devastating depression his whole life. I guess it caught up with him.

Exactly. I beat myself up pretty bad when a friend of mine did the same thing last year. Don't think for a second you could have prevented it.

People get sucked so deep into their own black hole that they lose all perspective. He probably had no idea that the last gift he gave to his kids was the biggest fuck you imaginable.

Had a long weekend cleaning the gore out my brother in law's house after he went this road.. lead to years of working over "what could I have done"

As others have already stated, realize that there was nothing you could have done. Sad to say, but he made his choice. Be there for the family and for yourself. If there is anything I can do let me know.

I can understand depression, especially right now... shame that this happened to your friend. I am sorry.

Suicide has always been creepy to me. I can't imagine not wanting to see what's going to happen tomorrow.

Lost a friend a couple of years ago. One of the best nurses I ever worked with. She seemed to "have it all". I know she struggled with depression, but one day, she happily took the afternoon off, went home and shot herself in the head. Her husband came home from work to that scene.

It doesn't make sense and never will.

It is scary when people you thought were rational make that choice. I hope I never end up in a place that makes me think it's a good idea.
