RIP Steve Cotter
Passed away yesterday just before turning 55. What a shitty turn.
One of the downsides of the Internet is that it allows like-minded people to form communities, and sometimes those communities are stupid.
RIP Steve Cotter
I googled it, heart attack. Thanks for the heads up.
Steve and I went to college at the same time for exercise science.
In school, he was always super friendly and known for extreme exercises—I remember hearing of guys holding him in a push-up position at shoulder height, dropping him on the ground, then he’d rebound up and onto a bench.
We became friends around 2000 or 2001. There was never a time he didn’t treat me with real friendship, camaraderie as fellow exercise coaches, or anything other than conviction that him and I would be successful. Very few people genuinely believed me in that point, in fact, Steve might have been the only one.
He introduced me to kettlebells, BOSU ball founder David Weck, and gave a personal recommendation that helped me land my first exercise coaching job. We also trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu together a bit.
I hadn’t seen Steve in a while. Maybe a lunch pre-Covid? He had a ton of success in the training world and did much to help me do the same.
Rest in peace, Steve. Thanks, buddy

We attended the same RKC cert, I want to say in 2002 or 2003. Always a very nice guy. We met up a few times when he'd come to town for seminars.
We hadn't talked in what I realize now must have been close to 20 years, but had the occasional wave online.
Steve was almost the last guy I'd say, "He's going to go young" about. And like Bill Fox, another guy with kids who aren't grown.
I'm not sure the heart attack story is accurate. Unless he lingered, it's not clear how people could know that so quickly.

There's a thread on Reddit, where a poster claims to be his nephew:
"Correct. He had a heart attack, and his son (my cousin) was with him and started CPR. It took over an hour for an ambulance to arrive and by then he was brain dead. He was pronounced yesterday morning around 11am."
I've got no reason to doubt the veracity, but if you hear otherwise, please share.

RIP Steve Cotter. I went to some of his training seminars in the past, I thought he was a good teacher.
I visited his Instagram page, he looked a lot different than I remembered. Must have lost leaned out even more or something.
