Second U.S. women's Judo medal (Rhonda Rousey was the first). She beat the Beijing gold medalist. I also feel she got kind of hosed in her match to get into the Gold medal round. Roumanian chick should have gotten a shido for passivity.

Malloy, 26, won the bronze by ippon (judo's version of a walk-off homer) when she threw Giulia Quintavalle of Italy with 2 minutes, 34 seconds elapsed in their five-minute match for one of two bronze medals awarded in the 125.7-pound weight class. Giuila won gold in the weight class in Beijing.

Hardly. Just a fluke. Good training and dedication. Not exactly a "system" producing a line of American Judoka.

There are only 50,000 active Judoka in the USA; at least 4/5 of them children under the age of 15 years of age.

France in comparison has 3,000,000 to 5,000,000 active Judoka. I keep on reading conflicting number. Anyway, doesn't matter if it's 3 or 5 million. France is a way smaller country with a far better developed Judo program.

All this is true. But now there are a handful of coaches that can take the great players and get them winning on the international stage. Maybe the trend will continue to improve. I'm seeing more collegiate players at national events. In the meantime, the three federations continue to snipe at each other. USA Judo athletes continue to foot most of their own bill while USA Judo officials travel en masse to every venue with a camera.

Marti had a great bronze medal match. Jimmy was calling for sode --> ko uchi from the first minute on. She hit it late in the match for a beautiful ippon.

Nick Delpoppolo won his first two matches but lost on flags to the #1 player in 73kg (flags= referee decision after 5 minutes of scoreless regulation and 3 minutes of golden score [sudden death]). He lost again to fight out of the repachage for bronze.

Travis Stevens is in the semis today. Watch it if you can.

Travis lost his semifinal match on flags to GER Ole Bischof.

Big day for the US. Kyle Vashkulat is up in a couple matches. Kayla Harrison (hopeful for gold) has a bye and is on to the round of 16.

If Kayla doesn't pull it out, Gemma Gibbons is a suitable replacement.

First U.S. Judo Gold ever! Nicely Done! Pedro's program seems to be working. She had a few wins by submission. I can't wait to get somewhere where I can sit down and watch the matches.

Awesome day for Kayla, Pedro, US judo, and women's judo. The 78kg female bracket was the best thing I've seen in sports in a long time.

This shit is great. I'm taking the rest of the day to drink and riot.

If listening to Jimmy coach Kayla doesn't get you ready to fight, nothing will.

I have enjoyed watching all of the US Judo players, Jimmy certainly know's how to get the best out of his athletes. Shame Gibbons couldn't do more in the final but she had the run of her life to get to the final, hats of to Kayla though!
