Iran sanctions at work

Post by seeahill »

DUBAI, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Iran will defeat a "conspiracy" against its foreign currency and gold markets, an adviser to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Friday, with pressure mounting on the authorities to deal with the rapid collapse of the rial.

Riot police fought demonstrators and arrested money changers in and around the Tehran bazaar on Wednesday during protests triggered by the fall of the Iranian currency, which has lost a third of its value against the dollar over the last ten days.

Washington says the fall in the rial over the past year has been caused by both economic mismanagement and sanctions, which the administration of President Barack Obama and the European Union tightened sharply this year.

Iran's leadership could "relieve the pressure its people are feeling" if it resolves concerns about its nuclear work, David Cohen, undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence at the U.S. Treasury, said in London.

Aides to senior U.S. lawmakers said on Friday they were looking at even more drastic sanctions to isolate Iran from the international financial system.

The bazaar, whose merchants were influential in bringing an end to Iran's monarchy in 1979, wields significant influence and this week's unrest is a clear signal that the economic hardship is having a profound effect on businessmen and residents alike.

This is a very serious situation. There is a lot of pressure on Khamenei to remove Ahmadinejad but they will need to find a way to do it without losing face," said Iranian-born Mehrdad Emami, an economics adviser to the European Union.

"Ahmadinejad is pushing ahead and that could create continuing unrest which will need a lot of security on the streets," he added.

Sanctions are pretty easy for them to get around.

Make a deal with the Russians. They're greedy white people with beedy eyes and cold, voidish hearts who want to afford western consumer goods and fine Afghan Horse.

After the Isrealis and us bust the shit out of it, let them come in and have the place as long as they seed Naval supremacy in the Persian Gulf to us. (And x amount of oil contracts with American companies.)

Let's sit down like Buisness men and fuck that place in a well planned, organized and ruthless manner, eliminate a problem and make lot's of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The sanctions are economic:

Sanctions have reduced Iran's access to products needed for the oil and energy sectors, have prompted many oil companies to withdraw from Iran, and have also caused a decline in oil production due to reduced access to technologies needed to improve their efficiency.[citation needed] According to Undersecretary of State William Burns, Iran may be annually losing as much as $60 billion in energy investment.[31] Many international companies have also been reluctant to do business with Iran for fear of losing access to larger Western markets

Sanctions tightened further when major supertanker companies said they would stop loading Iranian cargo. Prior attempts to reduce Iran's oil income failed because many vessels are often managed by companies outside the United States and the EU; however, EU actions in January extended the ban to ship insurance. This insurance ban will affect 95 percent of the tanker fleet because their insurance falls under rules governed by European law. "It's the insurance that's completed the ban on trading with Iran," commented one veteran ship broker.[38] This completion of the trading ban left Iran struggling to find a buyer for nearly a quarter of its annual oil exports.[4] Iran had hoped to sell more to Chinese and Indian refiners, though such attempts seem unlikely to succeed, particularly since China—the single-largest buyer of Iranian crude—has been curtailing its oil imports from Iran down to half their former level.[4]

You WOULD say something like that. Clueless. Russians laugh at your rampant consumerism and unbridled greed. I guess you base your views of what a "Russian" is by the few kike oligarchs that robbed the country and then ran away. Real Russians are normal folks. They couldn't care less about stupid Chinese-made sweatshop cellphones and other nonsense Americans obsess over. They'd also rather see Moscow burn than help out America, so good luck convincing them to help you get stronger and build more bases in their backyard. Really good analysis there, genius.
