You'd call it a Transubstantiation.

At least the second Drive By Trucker song here. This one written and sung by Mike 'Stroker Ace' Cooley. I can't tell you how much it reminds me of coming of age in the South. (Especially church girls in the late 80s not putting out.)

Your Daddy was mad as hell
He was mad at me and you
As he tied that chain to the front of my car and pulled me out of that ditch that we slid into
Don't know what his problem is
Why he keeps dragging you away
Don't know why I put up with this shit
When you don't put out and Zip City's so far away

Your Daddy is a deacon down at the Salem Church of Christ
And He makes good money as long as Reynolds Wrap keeps everything wrapped up tight
Your Mama's as good a wife and Mama as she can be
And your Sister's puttin' that sweet stuff on everybody in town but me
Your Brother was the first-born, got ten fingers and ten toes
And it's a damn good thing cause He needs all twenty to keep the closet door closed

Maybe it's the twenty-six mile drive from Zip City to Colbert Heights
Keeps my mind clean
Gets me through the night
Maybe you're just a destination, a place for me to go
A way to keep from having to deal with my seventeen-year-old mind all alone
Keep your drawers on, girl, it ain't worth the fight
By the time you drop them I'll be gone
And you'll be right where they fall the rest of your life

You say you're tired of me taking you for granted
Waiting' up till the last minute to call you up and see what you want to do
Well you're only fifteen, girl, you ain't got no secretary
And "for granted" is a mighty big word for a country girl like you
You know it's just your Daddy talking
Cause He knows that blood red carpet at the Salem Church of Christ
Ain't gonna ever see no wedding between me and you

Zip City it's a good thing that they built a wall around you
Zip up to Tennessee then zip back down to Alabama
I got 350 heads on a 305 engine
I get ten miles to the gallon
I ain't got no good intentions

Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co) died last weekend due to organ failure as a result of severe alcoholism. My favorite singer songwriter.

You used to say I had what it takes
I think I did if you meant too little too late
I can tell by the looks that I'm gettin'
I made some big mistakes
And I thought you said I was great

Shoot straight and give it my best try
I made my heart as hard as nails
That may be the way you live your life
But it's almost got me killed

Darling I'm not giving in
That happened miles ago
I heard the north star saying
Kid you're so lost even I can't bring you home

Did you think that we were going to last
Honey you know you don't have to answer that
Half of that was my kind of joke
I don't remember which half

I didn't know how blue I'd get
I didn't know how I'd get blamed for it
I didn't choose to go down this road
No one chooses to be sick

I'm saying everything is fine
By the look in my eye
But you know darling
Half of what a man says is a lie

It's your last chance to forget me now
That it's done for good
You always said I'd make it out
Somehow darling I knew I never would

There's a good mini-doc on Vimeo with great performances.

Paul Weller- Can You Heal Us (Holy Man)

Crystal words that hang so fine - But none will stop us falling
Pulling faster all the time - Powerless to warnings
If you feel the hand of God - Can you guide it holy man?
But you are only flesh and blood - Waiting too for judgement
Still saying! Daddy don't weep Momma don't cry
Everybody gets their time
Don't be sad don't be blue - Pray for me
I'll do the same for you

Split the Father and the Son - Hand words to ease them
If you have the hand of God - Can you heal us holy man?
But you are only flesh and blood - Waiting too for judgement

Still saying!
Hang on tight hang on strong
How much longer can this go on
But don't be sad don't be blue - It's one more thing set to confuse

Daddy don't weep Momma don't cry
Every fear must have its time
Don't be sad don't be blue - Pray for me
I'll do the same for you.

Can you bring the hand of God?
Can you stop the killing?
Get us back to hope and love - Never more be needed -

Still saying!
Bloods gone bad bad to worse
Worse to bad and back again
But don't be sad don't be blue - It's one more thing sent to confuse

Momma don't weep Daddy don't cry
Every fear must have its time
Don't be sad don't be blue - Pray for me I'll do the same for you.

Jethro Tull "Wind up"

At a time when I was figuring some deep shit out at 16, this was a big help in sorting shit out in that phase of life. God, my old man, people trying to make you into something you are not.

Wind Up

By Ian Anderson

When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was just a fool
So I left there in the morning
with their God tucked underneath my arm
their half-assed smiles and the book of rules
So I asked this God a question
and by way of firm reply,
He said I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays
So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):
before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers
I don't believe you:
you had the whole damn thing all wrong
He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the bishops harmonize these lines
how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son
when that was just an accident of Birth
I'd rather look around me compose a better song
`cos that's the honest measure of my worth
In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me,
as you lick the boots of death born out of fear.
When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was just a fool
So I left there in the morning
with their God tucked underneath my arm
their half-assed smiles and the book of rules
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the bishops harmonize these lines
When I was young and they packed me off to school
and taught me how not to play the game,
I didn't mind if they groomed me for success,
or if they said that I was just a fool
So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares):
before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers
Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school
and have all the bishops harmonize these lines
I don't believe you:

The Clash

"The Card Cheat"

Songwriters: STRUMMER, JOE / JONES, MICK / SIMONON, PAUL / HEADON, TOPPER
(Strummer/Jones)

There's a solitary man crying, "Hold me."
It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long!

If he only had time to tell of all of the things he planned
With a card up his sleeve, what would he achieve?
It means nothing!

From the opium den and the barroom gin
And the Belmont chair playing violins
The gambler's face cracks into a grin
As he lays down the king of spades

But the dealer just stares
There's something wrong here, he thinks
The gambler is seized and forced to his knees
And shot dead

He only wanted more time
Away from the darkest door
But his luck it gave in
As the dawn light crept in
And he lay on the floor

From the Hundred Year War to the Crimea
With the lance and the musket and the Roman spear
To all of the men who have stood with no fear
In the service of the King

Before you met your fate be sure you
Did not forsake your lover
May not be around anymore

(Slower)
There's a solitary man crying, "Hold me."
It's only because he's a-lonely
If the keeper of time runs slowly
He won't be alive for long

The way it paints an image in your mind of a beat down tavern and the card cheat being killed and then flashes to an image of men at war for Great Britain, like a Sharpe's novel and then it goes into an image of a lover left without her man.

So much punk was pure "Fuck you, Fuck this and Fuck that!" but the Clash were bigger than that. This is my favorite Clash song.

SLAYER! "Crooked Cross"
Songwriters: HANNEMAN, JEFFERY JOHN
(Lyrics: Hanneman; Music: Hanneman)

Time melts away in this living inferno,
Trapped by a cause that I once understood.
Feeling a sickness building inside of me,
Who will I really have to answer to.

March on through the rivers of red.
Souls drift, they fill the air.
Forced to fight, behind,
The crooked cross.

Do only what is expected of me,
With no emotions my feelings suppressed.
Blind obedience carries me through it all.
Conscience a word I learned to forget.

March on through the rivers of red.
Flesh burns, it fills the air. [sings: Souls drift, they fill...]
Forced to fight, behind,
The crooked cross.

LEAD: HANNEMAN, KING
KING, HANNEMAN

Time melts away in this living inferno,
Trapped by a cause that I once understood.
Blind obedience carries me through it all,
Do only what is expected of me.

March on through the rivers of red.
Souls drift, they fill the air.
Forced to fight, behind,
The crooked cross.

I remember the first time I heard this and looking at the lyric sheet and being blown away they had the balls to write a song from a German soldier's perspective.

Something that felt right and you realise you are doing evil, you are living in horror.

Powerful shit.

Another reason I had no respect for pop music or Butt metal back then. "Yeah baby get in my car." just did not fucking cut it when you had Slayer writing stuff like this.

David Allen Coe "If That Ain't Country

The old man was covered in tattoos and scars;
He got some in prison and others in bars.
The rest, he got workin' on old junk cars...
In the daytime.
They looked like tombstones in our yard
And I never seen him when he wasn't tired
And mean.
He sold used parts to make ends meet
Covered with sweat in the Texas heat
And mosquitoes.
And the neighbors said we lived like hicks
But they brung their cars for Paw to fix
Anyhow.
He was veteran-proud - tried and true;
He'd fought till his heart was black and blue.
Didn't know how he'd made it through
The hard times.
He bought our house on the G.I. Bill
But it wasn't worth all he had to kill
To get it.
He drank Pearl in a can and Jack Daniels Black,
Chewed tobacco from a mail pouch sack,
Had an old dog that was trained to attack...
Sometimes.
He'd get drunk and mean as a rattlesnake
And there wasn't much that he would take
From a stranger.
There was thirteen kids and a bunch of dogs,
House full of chickens and a yard full of hogs;
Spent the summertime cuttin' up logs
For the winter.
Tryin' like the devil to find the Lord;
Workin' like a nigger for my room and board;
Coal-burnin' stove - no natural gas -
If that ain't 'Country', I'll kiss your ass.
If that ain't 'country', it'll hair-lip the Pope.
If that ain't 'country', it's a damn good joke.
I've seen the Grand Ol' Opry, and I've met Johnny Cash.
If that ain't 'Country', I'll kiss your ass.

Momma sells eggs at the grocery store.
My oldest sister is a first-rate whore.
Dad says she can't come home anymore
And he means it.
Ma just sits and keeps her silence.
Sister, she left 'cause Dad got violent
And he knows it.
Momma, she's old far beyond her times,
Choppin' tobacco and I seen her cryin'
When blood started flowin' from her callused hands
And it hurt me.
She'd just keep workin' - tryin' to help the old man
Till the end of one row then back again
Like always.
She's been through Hell since Junior went to jail.
When the lights go out she ain't never failed
To get down on her knees and pray
Because she loves him.
Told all the neighbors he off in the war
Fightin' for freedom and he's good to the core
And she's proud.
Now, our place was a graveyard for automobiles.
At the end of the porch there was four stacks of wheels
And tires for sale for a dollar or two
Cash.
There was fifty holes in our old tin roof,
Me and my family was livin' proof
That people who forgot about poor white trash,
And if that ain't 'Country', I'll kiss your ass.
If that ain't 'country', it'll hair-lip the Pope.
If that ain't 'country', it's a damn good joke.
I've seen the Grand Ol' Opry, and I've met Johnny Cash.
If that ain't 'Country', I'll kiss your ass.
An' I'm thinkin' tonight of my blue eyes,
And flyin' with the gray speckled bird.
I didn't know God made honky-tonk angels
And went back to the wild side of life.

That is some real fucking life kind of shit right there.
I grew up on this shit.
it used to make me laugh as a kid and then I got older and it made me sad and somewhat proud.

WHITE PEOPLE!!!!!!!! :butthead: :drinkers: :partyman:

BOB DYLAN TANGLED UP IN BLUE LIVE 1975
LYRICS:
Early one morning the sun was shining
I was laying in bed
Wond'ring if she'd changed it all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama's homemade dress
Papa's bankbook wasn't big enough
And I was standing on the side of the road
Rain falling on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I've paid some dues getting through
Tangled up in blue.

She was married when we first meet
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split it up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walking away
I heard her say over my shoulder
"We'll meet again someday on the avenue"
Tangled up in blue.

I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind and I just grew
Tangled up in blue.

She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at her side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me "Don't I know your name ?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue.

She lit a burner on the stove and offered me a pipe
"I thought you'd never say hello" she said
"You look like the silent type"
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burning coal
Pouring off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue

I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the caf,s at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keeping on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue.

So now I'm going back again
I got to get her somehow
All the people we used to know
They're an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenter's wives
Don't know how it all got started
I don't what they're doing with their lives
But me I'm still on the road
Heading for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in Blue.

I fucking HATED Bob Dylan as a kid. His voice grated on me and being named after him but having the name of his namesake was something I wanted to get the fuck away from, as my mom remeinded me of it and what a great artest I was named for Blah Blah Hippie fucking Blah!

Then I got older, had some crushes, fell in love, had some regrets and then Bob Dylan was one bad mother fucker and could paint a picture in my mind.

Tom Waits "Temptation"

Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
everything is made from dreams
time is made from honey slow and sweet
only the fools know what it means
temptation, temptation, temptation
oh, temptation, temptation, I can't resist
I know that she is made of smoke
but I've lost my wayy
she knows that I am broke
so that I must play
temptation, temptation, temptation
oh, whoa, temptation, temptation, I can't resist
Dutch pink and Italian blue
she is waiting there for you
my will has disappeared
now my confusions oh so clear
temptation, temptation, temptation
whoa, whoa, temptation, temptation
I can't reisist

I can;t hear this and not want to fuck, so I;m outta here to go wake up the Ol' Lady and make vicious lust to her! :JR:
