My son, 18, graduates tomorrow from high school. I'd like to get him something nice, but strippers, alcohol, and hookers have been forbidden. So I was thinking of a nice pen or maybe a zippo lighter or something. Any input?

Seriously. Something he'll keep and treasure and remember his graduation and old man every time he looks at it? A good wrist watch. Best one you can get for what you want to spend.

This is a good suggestion as well but a good wrist watch can be significantly more expensive than a good pocket knife.

A pat on the back and a "Good job" was it in my day... Damn spoiled kids now with their Zippos and Camaros.

Not big on cars as a present. Where I grew up, more of us had guns than cars. Nobody got shot, but I have known four that killed themselves with their driving.

I got quite a but for hs and college graduation, but the best present I got was when my tutu got leis for myself, the friend I walked with, and an extra, which I gave to my dad.

The little stuff with the most meaning is always the best.

I did the pocket knife two years ago, it was great. He worked at a farm and needed a good knife so we got him one for Christmas. I like the watch idea, too, but wanted to spend a little less.

And asking hm? Screw that. But I do like the process rather than the event.

In all seriousness you are the only one on this who knows the kid and what would be special for him or what he would really need.

Is the point of the gift something he wants (big earl hooker), utility now (cash), utility in the future (nice pens), or something he'll remember you gave him? I don't remember what my parents gave me for HS graduation, but I remember picking out a single shot 20 gauge shotgun with my dad when I was 8.

Unless you're throwing him out of the house tomorrow morning, in which case he'll need cash, get him something he can use and will remember. What are the best gifts you got?

Is there anything personal that you have that he really likes? Here's something I did for one of my son's when he graduated college. I had a Rolex Submariner Date that I had forever. Had it before most people even knew what a Rolex was. I took it to Rolex and had it completely refurbished and I gave it to him. He knew it was my most prized personal possession and he knew that me giving it to him meant something and that I was proud of him. Uhh he also knows it's his ass if he fucks up that watch.

One of the things I've noticed spending a lot of time around 20-somethings lately is that they don't wear watches. I would go with the pocket knife.
