Natural Born Heroes

Post by Protobuilder »

It is what you hope you are going to get. Chris McDougall finds interesting stories to tell and tells them in a damn fine way. Cretans fighting Nazi invaders, parkour, knife throwing and high-fat diets. If you liked Born to Run you will like this book.

I couldn't get into this one even though I really wanted to... He lost me at the fascia-is-the-key-to-superhuman-strength thing...

I haven't finished it - have perhaps 25% of the book remaining. On the other hand, I flew through and then went back and did it again after I picked myself up.

I loved Born To Run and read a lot of books about WW2, but yeah, not this one.

So much of this book was just flat out stupid.

However, some of it was pretty entertaining.

So I'm finishing it up and it gets more and more ridiculous the further I go. Greek shepherds parkour across the mountains, some mythical Greek for sure lifted a 1058 lb rock etc. I like how he inserts the current low carb groupthink into it too

So, overall, this book isn't bad. McDougall is an engaging writer, and a lot of this was pretty entertaining

The low carb agenda a la Taubes is pursued pretty heartily
The Erwin Lecorr natural movement stuff is discussed and pushed

Indeed. I need to recant my previous post in which I recanted my initial post.

Finish was good. McDougall is trying for the same kind of formula he used in his previous book (i.e. wrap sidebars around an engaging story) though I liked the sidebars more than the actual story and wished they would have been longer. However, he is still a damn good storyteller and I would read whatever he publishes.
