The Man in the High Castle

It's on Amazon, free w/ Prime.

It's an alternate history if Germany and Japan had won WW2 and occupied the US. The 'Greater German Reich' goes to the east side of the Rockies and the 'Pacific States' goes to the west. The Rockies themselves are poor and neutral and seemingly lawless. Plus it's where the Nazis sent any non-whites.

The show is set in '62 (I think) and Hitler is sick, setting up fears over his successor. Turns out Germany has the Bomb (and used it against DC) and vastly superior tech to Japan. The story, thus far, follows two people in the Resistance. They're smuggling films that show an alternate history as if the Germans and Japanese had lost, which are made by 'the man in the high castle'. Germany and Japan are desperate to cover them up.

Very compelling, creepy, beautifully shot. Worth watching for the ghostly and ghastly 'Edelweiss' sung at the opening. Highly recommended after only three episodes of the ten available.

Oh, and it's based on a Phillip Dick novel of the same name, which is now on my list.

I'm through 8 of them. I think this show is really good. It "feels heavy", if that makes sense.

From what I can tell, the show doesn't have a whole lot in common with the book, but I don't care.

For once, someone has watched something that sounds remotely interesting.

We've got one left in this season. It is very, very good.

Have you watched The Leftovers on HBO? Mind-wobbling show well worth your time.

I loved the book. I haven't had a chance to watch the series yet.

James P. Hogan's Proteus Operation was enjoyable too.

I'm re-reading Childhood's End in anticipation of the SyFy miniseries.

As usual, I don't know what the fuck Terry is blathering about.
Excellent series, I'm six episodes in. Every episode ends on a pretty intense cliffhanger.
In addition to "Edelweiss" (I'll never watch The Sound of Music the same way again), the opening credits show the shadows of paratroopers forming tears on the cheeks of presidents on Mt Rushmore.

Started strong but petered out over time - the central problem was that every character and every plot was more interesting than the main character love triangle (and the resistance). The universe-building was amazing - I want a NY detective show set under the American Reich and a series about life in the neutral zone and shit - but the main story itself wasn't terribly interesting.

I read the book years and years ago, can't remember if it was any better. Characters weren't Dick's strong suit so... probably not.

Similar premise. As bleak as one would expect

Uhhh what the fuck happened in that last scene? We on some alternate reality shit or what? Never read the book.

Show was dragging a bit and was shot/colored frustratingly dark. I have a pretty nice tv and still had to make sure lights were off all the time.

I think there are some cool plot lines developing.

Tagomi stepped into our timeline. I think that was part of the novel, but maybe with a different character?

I've got a first edition of this on my bookshelf.

I'll check it out when I get a chance.
