Neckbeards will complain but very entertaining.

The reviews are great. Interested to see it.

SPoilers...........................

As someone who loved the original trilogy, and watched it a ton of times, idolizing the characters. And as someone who hated the prequels from the 90's - thinking they were CG trash, full of bad acting and generally forgettable scenes.

I found it disappointing. Maybe a D+.

It looks good, though way too much CG. And your favorite characters are there (Luke and Leia, and Chewbacca). There were plotholes like how the hell can the heroine fight with a lightsaber expertly with zero training? Or why does one of the main characters evaporate? There were jokes but they felt so snarky, a word I hate to write or say, and don't really fit the vibe of what I consider Star Wars. There's a place of darkness that looks like a wookies asshole, but why is it so dark once they enter? Why the fuck did Snoke have to be CG - the ugly bad guy. They could have just tossed a mask on some basketball player - a la Darth Vader.

I ultimately didn't give a shit about almost any of the characters, because there wasn't any warmth or connection between anybody or much character development. And the CG kept throwing me off because it looks so fake.

There was a pretty bad ass fight scene in it. And some parts that were cute or funny or gross that I liked. And that elevates it a bit.

Oh, AAAAND. I was constantly searching for recycled stuff from the Empire Strikes Back (because the Force Awakens borrows heavily from the 1977 film A New Hope), and there were two large parts that felt like big rehashes, but lacked the intimacy or awe of the 80's film.

Angry review over.

That mostly describes me. I adored the original movie when it came out. Didn't like the 2 sequels so much, mostly because I was high school aged and too cool for them by that point. But the wonder of the first one caught me exactly at the right time.

I thought this current movie was great. I thought it was possibly the best Star Wars movie I'd ever seen. One thing I've noticed in recent years, as my now-8yo son has gotten into it, is that none of the first 6 movies stand up to re-watches as a grownup. The prequel trilogy is largely intolerable. The first movie, that I loved so much 50 yrs ago, the dialogue and acting (other than Ford & Sir Alec) are so laughably bad that you wince and cringe most of the way thru. Nothing like that in this movie.

It's long as fuck. It's a full 2-1/2 hours (150 mins), and of course that's after sitting thru ~20 mins of previews. Bogs down some in the middle, as all of these overlong action epics have lately. But it's fun and lively and interesting, and it doesn't embarrass the way most Star Wars movies do. Very solid.

The interaction between Kylo Ren and Rey was great. It could have been like an intergalactic version of My Dinner with Andre, just those two sitting down and discussing things over fried Porg, and it would have been even better.

Well my fellow Star Wars fan, I'm glad you had a good time.

I don't want to be the person to take away someone's enjoyment of a film or book or whatever. It did not work for me. I feel like I'm really struggling to enjoy movies these days. The last 4-5 90%+ rotten tomato reviewed movies I've seen (Wolverine, Thor, Blade Runner and Coco) I thought were, at best, occasionally funny but derivative, if not terrible.

I want to hear what Darth Dylan has to say about it, but he posted on facebook negative things based on his reading of the plot and was planning to not go.

I was 10 when Star Wars came out for the first time. As an engineer and nerd, I loved the original trilogy. I disliked the prequels.

If you disliked the concept of midichlorians, that Anakin was immaculately conceived, and that the Skywalker bloodline is the heir apparent to the Force throne than this movie helps to forget about that crap.

A lot of negativity I've seen is because it's been years since the original trilogy, and people have built into their minds fantasies of how things should have been, and it's not the case. They don't like that Luke is (still) a whiner. Or that other people have powers, etc.

Things to consider:
* Anakin was a whiner, Luke was a whiner, why are people complaining Ren is a whiner? It runs in the family.
* Luke received very little Jedi training and managed, why do people have a hard time with Ray having so little training?
* Luke ignored his teachers to leave his training early, and got his ass kicked by Vader. He then says he won't face Vader (the wimp), and then he deserts his team (like AWOl treason) on Endor, potentially putting them all in great danger, just so he can get his ass kicked by Palpatine (Oh, and the only reason he beat Vader in ROTJ is because he let fear and anger take over for a few seconds) - why are people surprised he went into seclusion?
* Kylo Ren did what "the chosen one" and Force immaculate conception child was never able to do, kill his master and take their position as ruler. How it happened was kind of garbage, but he did it.

The Last Jedi did a good job with what it was supposed to do, take the focus off the Skywalker bloodline, and some of the stupid ass stuff from the prequels, so that Disney can make more Star Wars movies.

I also was 10 when the first movie came out. Or I guess 11. I adored the first movie with all my 11yo heart. Liked the second one ok. Was too cool and over it by the time the third movie came out, when I was in high school; though of course all of us saw it.

Like with James Bond movies, how it's a bit of a betrayal when you grow up enough to realize that some of your old favorites are ridiculous and stupid shit, the early Star Wars movies don't stand up to adult re-watches. But I enjoy my son's reaction to them; they're fun now in a different way, like a family event.

I thought this movie was a colossal pile of shit. And I thought the prequels were as well (though the Darth Maul lightsaber battle vs Obi Wan and Qui Gon Jinn is the best of the series).

Midichlorians was an idiotic concept, horrible acting, writing, fake as fuck CGI. Hayden Christiansen was horrendous, etc.

I’ve read dozens of angry Last Jedi reviews, some of the complaints I could care less about, some I agree with.

More things I hate about the Last Jedi

Problem 1 - The Force is now a fucking super power, like a Marvel hero. No talk of mastery, a bullshit meditation scene instead of numerous scenes of the lure of the dark side, working with a lightsaber, training to even budge a rock. It’s literally a copy of the Marvel mentality. Fuck all that.

Problem 2 - Endless plot holes. You can now blast ships at light speed through other ships? The New Order (whatever there name is) can’t travel ahead of a fleeing fleet at
lightspeed and then stop them? There’s so many in this film.

Problem 3 - Poor character continuity. Luke is now considering killing his nephew in his sleep based on a glimmer of darkness in him, but tried to save his father, the most nefarious man around because he had a glimmer of light? Basically all of Luke’s behavior. Tossing away the lightsaber.....

Problem 4 - Numerous rip-offs from Empire Strikes Back. The dumb scene in the seaweed asshole was straight from Empire. The At-At’s in Hoth vs the At-Ats on the Salt Planet, complete with trenches. Rey leaving her training because she sensed good in Kylo.

Problem 5 - Lack of character development. Snoke killed with zero explanation of his back story. No knights of ren, zero interaction of Finn and Rey. When Luke hears of Han dying, what do they do? Cutaway to another scene.

Problem 6 - Dumb ass shit. The pointless sideplot of Finn and Rose. Luke drinking space walrus milk. Yoda lightning bolting a tree from beyond the grave. Leia flying around in outer space. The resistance plan is to hide behind a big door and do nothing?

Problem 7- Useless and distracting CGI. Did snoke need to be cg? That whole casino planet was fake as fuck, as was much of this movie.

What a hideous money grab. Fuck Disney, fuck all future Star Wars installments that they make, fuck Rian Johnson for making this dog shit film.

Bram, I thought your first review was the greatest movie review I've ever read, especially this:
There's a place of darkness that looks like a wookies asshole, but why is it so dark once they enter?
And then you fittingly wrote a sequel review that I can't decide which one is now better. I was still teetering on seeing it after the first one, but the second one sealed the deal. Not now. Well Done.

The force is the force. Think of how our ability to manipulate the electromagnetic spectrum has evolved in 3 generations of humans. Why should their knowledge of how to use the force not evolve? We will be doing crazy shit with quantum physics in our lifetime. They should evolve too.
Problem 2 - Endless plot holes. You can now blast ships at light speed through other ships? The New Order (whatever there name is) can’t travel ahead of a fleeing fleet at

The physics bullshit starts with "light speed" in the first place and continues with fighters maneuvering like like they are flying through something like air. Ever play asteroids? That is how you manuever in space, you point your ass in the direction opposite to where you want to go and hit the throttle. And in space 99.99999% of your time is spent not thrusting unless you are using weak ass ion thrusters, otherwise you'd be zorching all over the place zing-zing-zing, so just accept the physics as story enablers.
What a hideous money grab. Fuck Disney, fuck all future Star Wars installments that they make, fuck Rian Johnson for making this dog shit film.
What a great movie. The best scenes were close ups of people's faces as they experienced emotions, and this movie placed them in plenty of those moments and let the actors act. CGI scenes are 90% boring as shit anyway. Yawn. Except for going to light speed through the fleet. That was worthy.

Both Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker were basically saying screw all the old shit, with Sith and Jedi and ritual and training, like only the priesthood can connect with the force/speak to God. Kind of Martin Luther-ish.
Don’t believe everything you think.

well, I'll admit it.

I hate Star Wars.

the muppets were creepy (which was pretty much ALL of it), the story line was dumb, and I just recently watched 2 and 3 and jesus christ, it was basically toddlers fighting with light sabers and bullshit until it got gory for the sake of being gory.

I saw 7, dumb.

I didn't watch rogue 1, but yeah, so maybe I'd like it.

I thought the eewoks were kind of cute in 6, but murderous, so still creepy. I think the only thing I thought was cool was the at-at;s romping through the jungle.

dumb, creepy, and dumb.

glad you all like it, my whole family went to see it without me and they liked it.

I loved the first one. Then Lucas drained my affection one episode at a time with poor story telling.

He created a great universe with a few cool characters; I'll give him that but it's not enough to trust him with another 2 hours of my time.

And.....fuck Disney.
