Burt Richardson's book is a breakdown of his many years experimenting with classical silat in a pressure environment. First Dogbrothers fights, later with BJJ stylists, muay Thai fighters and MMA athletes. What remains is the basics, and the applications. He also shows when things work with a blade, they don't often work empty handed against a skilled attacker. The comparisons with wrestling, BJJ, kickboxing are there and this is a book jammed with data. I like it because it mirrors my experience with similar adventures.
I have Burt's 8 dvd series that were self produced. Very good instruction, but not as smooth as they could be with editing, etc. However Burt shot with a company for Black Belt magazine that has streaming videos. The clips are even more precise and the delivery is better. They have a Fourth of July discount. There is a discount in the back of the book as well after Aug. 1. I'd say these are worthwhile. This material mixes well with boxing/muay Thai and certainly BJJ.

Fred has his critics from the over the top Funker Tactical Youtube accounts. Given that.. my bud, Chris Derbaum just got back from teaching Kuntao in Paris. He said the attitude over there is just harsher.. Lots of students get in scuffles and they are used to harder contact. Fred is highly regarded by the Silat community and as a bodyguard. [Also advisor on "Taken"]. Fred has no problem getting on the mats with the Brazilians too... he likes to mix it up and learn.

Just a side note. The "Father of Silat" in France is Charles Joussot. He attended Chris' workshop and validated the Mastro Defense system.. since Fred had trained with him. Charles is in his 70's. Saturday night after the first day of the workshop.. Charles was in a scuffle and prevailed. Then returned on Sunday. That gives you an idea of attitude over there.

Personally I like Fred's mechanics on the simple things like grabs, chokes, etc. Simple and not fine motor skill.
