No, in terms of responsibility for replacing the water system. It's a local water system that serves a purely local purpose.

Not totally accurate. My Village is right in the middle of similar (but due to an inordinate number of water breaks that cause problems with rates and quality issues). And the EPA is providing the majority of the funding process for us to install a completely new system. Sure it's a combination of grants monies - low interest loans etc from various sources. But the whole thing comes down to the EPA findings that started us upon the whole process. So while it is a local problem - the solution is far beyond local abilities - and requires state and federal monies to solve. This much media coverage etc is going to bring money behind it to help the city.

A distant but loud and familiar voice is chiming in on the Flint water crisis: Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who from his prison cell in Oklahoma is using social media to blast politicians about the ongoing water fiasco, claiming he knew about Flint's troubles when he was mayor, and that plenty others did, too.

Kilpatrick's venting appeared in the form of a letter republished on a supporter's Facebook page in which he knocks Gov. Rick Snyder.

"When the current Governor of Michigan says that he 'only recently was made aware of this issue', he is being misleading at best. But more than likely, he is being viciously, aggressively, and deliberately untruthful," the Kilpatrick letter states.

LANSING — The Snyder administration quietly trucked in water to state buildings in January of 2015 – ten months prior to Governor Snyder publicly admitting there was reason for concern in Flint, according to a document obtained by Progress Michigan.

The document is a Facility Notification sent by the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) in response to poor water quality in Flint. The notification stated that water coolers were being installed on each occupied floor next to the drinking fountains so that state workers could choose to continue to drink Flint water or a safe alternative.

A Jan. 7, 2015, notice from the state Department of Technology, Management and Budget, which oversees state office buildings, references a notice about a violation of drinking water standards that had recently been sent out by the City of Flint.

I ignore 99% of all news stories but this is a fascinating one. Everyone trying to cast this into red/blue politics can suck a dick. This shit is way more interesting than that.

The part that is the most fascinating to me that seems to be getting the least amount of play is the fact the lead intrusion is stemming primarily from privately owned infrastructure. The water itself is safe, the main trunks are cast iron and safe, the street laterals (meter to house, is where lead intrusion begins) I've spent a bit of time with the case law on this as worked on a case where a local utility upgraded a number of main trunks and street supply lines which massively increased water pressure and caused individually owned and aging lateral connections for a bunch of homes to fail. (10k plus to fix each minimum) Responsibility on the part of the Utility? None Percent. This is a radically different outcome but still to me it's a fascinating collision of public and private responsibilities.

With the right director you could have Chinatown level source material for a movie right here.

The death toll from pneumonia nearly doubled in Genesee County at the height of the Flint lead-poisoning crisis, supporting the suspicion among medical experts that many of these deaths were actually Legionnaires’ disease that went undiagnosed by hospital and local health officials.

The Michigan Health and Human Services Department has confirmed that 87 people died in the county from pneumonia in 2015. That follows 90 previously confirmed pneumonia deaths in 2014, the year state officials switched the source of Flint’s drinking water and improperly treated it, causing lead to leach from pipes into the water system.

The soaring number of pneumonia deaths over two years mark a dramatic rise from 53 deaths in 2013, representing the highest increase in the state and a sharp spike from previous years, before the water switch. The spike coincided with an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, a more deadly form of pneumonia that often goes undiagnosed and requires different medical treatment than more common forms of pneumonia.

Medical experts told Bridge it’s likely some portion of the deaths attributed to pneumonia were actually undiagnosed cases of Legionnaires’. There is no way to know how many, however, because neither McLaren Flint, a major hospital in Flint, nor county or state health officials ordered routine testing of pneumonia patients for Legionnaires’, even well after becoming aware of a Legionnaires’ outbreak in 2014.
