Umm, no. Censuses have used the term for years - frequently "white, non-Hispanic", which means that there are, in fact, white Hispanics.
Quite the opposite. The purpose of "white, non-Hispanic" is to separate Hispanics from Whites for minority/victim status identification. The media has been pretty rigorous in keeping the two classifications separate.
Yes, I thought of that but I know a pair of white Puerto Ricans who are ethnically and visually as white as the average poster here who have been told that they are "Hispanic" because of where they are from. It is likely that they are mistaken.
Spaniards are white Hispanics as are a lot of Mexicans. Some countries separate ethnicity from nationality, others do not.
It is likely that the emphasis on skin color in the media is to sell papers.
Regardless of what color they are, you pursue and shoot another unarmed person and you need to be locked up.

The media has decided this was a Hate Crime. But it is possible that Zimmerman did nothing illegal. This is what trials are for, to establish actual facts & apply the law. And even trials sometimes get things wrong.
Zimmerman had every right to be out of his SUV (not that it was the smart thing to do), as long as he didn't menace or threaten Trayvon Martin.

I think this is where it's going to get difficult for Zimmerman; when you pair up his history, the fact that 911 told him not to pursue Martin and he didn't comply, and the idea of a guy getting into his car to follow an unknown teenager, and then get out of the car where whatever happens (since we don't know for sure) and the kid ends up shot to death, it's pretty understandable for a reasonable person to conclude that Zimmerman likely overstepped his bounds.
If Zimmerman had just been out, said there was a confrontation and shot because he was in fear of his life, there'd be outrage but I'd imagine he'd be free of any wrong-doing (at least in terms of the court of law). But the background history lets a prosecutor build a much different person in the eyes of a court.

Would this benefit Zimmerman if it ever came to trial, in that he could claim so much shit had been flung publicly beforehand that he'd never be able to get a fair trial?
