Something I enjoyed when I carried mail was talking to older people - their stories were truly fascinating. Talk about been there and done that - many of them were tough enough to wear their clothes out from the inside. Lots of vets of course with some crazy stories about war - not often any hero BS but the things they saw, had to do and survive - all while not losing their sanity were really something. I've never failed to look at an older person since then and not wonder what all they have seen and lived through. I worked at the Post Office for years with this guy who was a tail gunner in a B52 who flew and flew and flew mission after mission - these guys had a life expectancy measured in hours or days at best. He never said a word about it - some of the other guys there told me about it - I asked him one time if he did what they said - his answer - Yep - end of conversation. Any time I start thinking I'm tough - I ask myself if I could have done what those old timers did and made it through.
