I distrust LEO almost more than anyone on this board but that did not seem off to me at all. He seemed to a bit of drunk handful but the detention went about how 4/5 of the times I've been "detained"...They ask nicely, they ask less nicely, you walk out the bar...I just had to good fortune of not deciding to pull a fake gun out and point it at two cops.

"The Lunge-able Area" is second nature to cops. But what you might not know is it's also legally searchable for officer and public safety. I.E. your car's glovebox, a dresser drawer in a home, ect.

No agenda, there's no agenda to push that I can see. The guy had a replica gun. Male officer was PDQ putting shots off once the suspect got out of reach and turned, but it appears the female officer panicked and pulled her tazer. Suspect acted bizarrely, given the fake gun, and forced the officers to shoot.

Here's the thing about that. The female officer who kept pulling the trigger:

a. has a life of her own

b. has a responsibility to protect the lives of those in the immediate vicinity

c. probably has family members at home whom she doesn't want to leave without a wife and mother

d. showed no signs of malicious intent when she shot him- her voice said it all, you could tell that she was terrified but still holding it together, while she neutralized that threat. Her training took over and she did what she was trained to do, despite any fear she was feeling

This was not a malicious shooting, nor was it abuse of authority. This was cops encountering what they have been taught is their worst nightmare- a suspect who appears calm and then draws what appears to be a weapon, and responding by taking out that threat in a textbook manner.

Why do I always turn off my engine and place my keys on the passenger's side of the dashboard, and keep both my hands in plain-view on the steering wheel whenever I get pulled over, and why do I speak to the cops in a calm, polite, even manner, while making no sudden movements?

Because when the cops approach me, I want them to know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I am NOT a threat.

Because I don't want to get shot.

Act like a jackass like that guy did, and you get shot. And society is all the better for it, in my opinion.

Well, Naffy, I will say that I don't get pulled over anywhere near as much as I did when I was a kid. In fact, until last October, when I got popped for doing 55 in a 35 on a back road I was taking to BJJ class (I'd never gone that way before and was unaware of the speed limit), I hadn't been pulled over in three, or four, years.

And the cop was totally cool with me, too. He said "Look, man, I get that you just weren't paying attention to the speed limit signs and were in a hurry, but you need to slow your ass down. And look here, you didn't give me any trouble, SO, I advise that you go to court, on this. If you do, we'll see what we can do."

So I went to court, he met me there, took me aside, and dropped the charges down to five over, with no points. I paid a nominal fine, a pittance really, and was on my way.

All because when he pulled me over, I was polite, calm, and honest with him.

I think, in my entire driving career since I was 17, I've been pulled over around 15 times...

And I have only ever been issues citations four times. The rest of the times I just got warnings. That says something especially when you consider that I don't exactly look like a respectable member of society, and haven't, really ever. You just have to be calm, cool, polite, and truthful.

When I went in the Navy, I confessed to the recruiter I'd had a few speeding tickets. The recruiter said he needed a copy of my driver's transcripts. I didn't know there was a such a thing. Went to the DMV to get a copy, the woman prints it out and looks at it, looks at me, and asks, "How'd you get here?"

"Uhhh, a friend drove me?"

Turned out I'd lost my license for too many tickets, but missed the letter letting me know. Yikes. This was followed by the first of two remedial driver re-education courses I've had to take.
