I'm actually more shocked by the shitbird vernacular of the "reporter" ...That was abhorrent.

DTE Energy has five times the number of energy theft investigators than it did two years ago and has added a software program to help stem the rising costs to businesses and residential customers from electricity and gas theft.
Since the economic downturn started in 2008, DTE has been investigating 80,000 to 100,000 energy theft complaints each year, said Amy Walt, DTE's director of revenue management and protection.
Walt said DTE investigators -- who work closely with the Detroit Police Department and Wayne County Prosecutor's Office -- turn off power or gas at about 60,000 homes or businesses each year that have illegal and often dangerous connections.
DTE's actions are taken to reduce financial losses that are usually passed along to business and residential customers in higher rates and to avoid public safety problems for the people in the buildings, Walt said. Rate increases also include provisions to cover capital costs.
Illegal connections have been increasing 25 percent a year since 2009, primarily in Detroit and Downriver because of high unemployment making it hard for customers to pay utility bills, she said. DTE serves about 2.2 million electrical customers in Southeast Michigan and about 1.2 million gas customers statewide.

Rental housing, gas stations, auto repair shops, convenience stores and restaurants are among the most common businesses that steal electricity, Walt said.
