There are apps available that let you bracket your phone to the dashboard. Most people I know use it for accident evidence; if you search you can find a ton of videos showing "scam" accidents that are only disproved through the evidence recorded on said phones. It's one of those easy, worthwhile CYA devices.

I think catching crazy wrecks is more of a symptom, instead of the actual justification of using them.

This exact scenario was my first really bad wreck when I started. Besides the gore, what made it the worst was the fact that it was a teenage girl, her sister was buckled up and unharmed going bananas in the ditch, and sister had called mom who showed up at the scene as well.
Dead people have never bothered me much, but the reactions of their loved ones suck.
That was the scenario: Friday night, four girls going to a party. The driver took the freeway exit too late & rolled the vehicle - she died. The other three were basically unhurt - they were sitting in the ambulance, unaware that their girlfriend/cousin was dead.

Someday I want to put my boys on the phone with some of you EMTs and have you scare the living fuck out of them with these brutal truths.

The time I got ejected was on of only a handfull of times I can remember I did not wear a seatbelt in a car as my Step Dad was fucking psycho about my brother and me wearing a seatbelt.

I was tired, put the seat back and the rest is history.

I have only rode without a seatbelt 1 time since and it was because the car did not have one for my position (Buddies Dodge Dart) and if I made a thing about it I would have been taken a seatbelt from a female. This was 3 1/2 years after the wreck and I was wound tight the whole fucking ride. I have also not been able to sleep in a car while it's moving with the exception of my father and one time Crom, but I had also been up for 36 hours and I only slept a few minutes and then joltede awake. Fuck I dont really like being a passenger to this day and that wreck was 23 years ago.

I agree with DARTH about having you guys talk to kids. As much as people say that scare tactics don't work, I credit drunk driving assemblies as a partial reason that I never drove drunk - having EMTs come in and simply share what they see would be a fantastic prevention programme.

I remember having a presentation like that during high school. Endless stream of bloody, crushed up car parts and mangled guard rails and median dividers.

The videos are the scariest to me, though, because in a picture I think of some Michael Bay scene, crazy explosions and a long, drawn out situation that allows one to successfully navigate it and come out on the other end okay just by keeping a cool head and having fast reactions...

...but the videos make you realize that shit happens way too quickly. You're either dead, or you're not, and there's fuckall you can do about it when shit happens. You can drive defensively and wear your seatbelt as precautions, but fuck, cars can be obliterated in milliseconds.

Survived a head on crash of small car into big truck with only seatbelt. Just some bruising. As my friend said about his ejection from an F-14, if I had known I was going to live, I could have enjoyed it. Talk about an exchange of energy.

Twenty-some years ago, when I started in the Fire Service, a rollover or head-on MVA was an automatic Medic dispatch. (In the Seattle/King County area, this is almost like bringing the Emergency Room to the accident scene.) But now that seat/shoulder belts & airbags are commonplace, we rarely need Paramedics on those calls.

We often go to check out an MVA & find the cars completely FUBAR, but the driver is 100% healthy, talking on the cellphone. Maybe with some chest soreness from the shoulder belt.
