Five Spice Donkey Meat

Post by Turdacious »

And in the middle of the latest Chinese food scare: Wal-Mart.

The retailer said it was recalling "Five Spice" donkey meat sold at its stores in Jinan in eastern China's Shandong province after authorities indicated that the popular snacks were actually made from fox.

Speaking of crazy food at Wal-Mart. I saw these on the shelf in the checkout line yesterday. Never knew such a thing existed.

In my mind, I'm thinking...an egg...should be refrigerated...eat this and you could possibly die. The miracle of pickling.

I like how you have to call for nutrition information.
Arms are the only true badge of liberty. The possession of arms is the distinction of the free man from the slave.

I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.

You used to see pickled eggs in neighborhood type bars. Jars of them in pickling brine at room temp. Originally, before refrigeration, pickling eggs was a way of preserving them.

Wal Mart wouldn't try to slip you a rotten egg, would they?

About refrigerating eggs, is America the only place that does this? A pro mountain biker I follow on instagram who is from the UK had stacks of crates of eggs on the counter in the background of one of her pics.

Well we don't refrigerate our "straight from the chicken" eggs, but the washing practice that goes on in mass production removes the protective layer. Eggs are porous and so when the protective layer is gone, the bacteria can get in. They come from a chickens butt you know. With birds, its always anal. :). That being said, I'm glad they wash and refrigerate mass produces eggs, but I prefer getting them straight from the chicken's butt when I can.

Lol possibly. Don't you live in the south Kaz? I was thinking I saw that you lived further south than me. If so I'm shocked you haven't seen these in more stores.

You know, after reading this I do remember now. My wife's cousin has chickens we sometimes get eggs from and we leave them out until cooking them. And yes, they are much better.

I've said for years that junk food wrappers should just have a sign on the label that says: If you're eating this you don't really give a shit about your macros. In fact, you don't even know what macros are!

Lol possibly. Don't you live in the south Kaz? I was thinking I saw that you lived further south than me. If so I'm shocked you haven't seen these in more stores.
I live just east of Jackson, MS. I don't usually accompany the spousal unit to Wal-Mart, and I usually pay at the pump. I'm no stranger to all assortments of packaged meats and such, but this one just took me by surprise.

Whereabouts you from?

So, you're trying to tell me that there's no such thing as a chicken pussy? Wal-mart is selling boiled eggs right next to pre-paid phone cards, and now this. It's like I don't know what to believe anymore.

We have chickens and the father-in-law (raised on a dairy farm, chemist by education) thinks we're crazy for even bothering to put eggs in the fridge. He says 3-6 months before you have anything to worry about and that only consists of going from Grade A to B, indicating the breakdown of the egg itself and nothing to do with nutrition. Basically after that time period you're not going to get good over-easy, and should think more scrambled.

There is such a difference between grocery store eggs and chicken coop eggs you can't believe it. The yolks are way yellower and the shells are much harder on chicken coop eggs. I'd be very surprised if there wasn't way more nutrition in the coop eggs. They definitely taste better. I am not sure if it was always this way because I remember occasionally getting eggs from a farmer when I was a kid and didn't notice much difference then.

I knew an old woman who grew up in Ireland way back when, before refrigeration, and she said they used to dip eggs in wax to preserve them. I never heard of just leaving them out but I could believe it.

There are still pickled eggs behind the bar at some of the old school gin mills around here, and the red beet pickled eggs. You used to see pickled kielbasi and (I am not making this up) pickled pig's feet.
But when I stand in front of the mirror and really look, I wonder: What the fuck happened here? Jesus Christ. What a beating!
