You mean we're 3 replies into this without Buddy Rich????
Old school BMF to the nines! He rocks that out in a dinner jacket, bow-tie, cufflinks, J&B on 'da rocks and AARP magazine via snail mail.

I really like Josh Freese. My pick is Danny Carrey. Carter Beauford from Dave Matthews Band is a helluva drummer as well.
This is just the first clip I came across.

Here's another from my favorite Tool song.

Steve Jordan has always been one of my favorite drummers. He can back up a real R&B band better than just about anybody.

I don't have a lot of experience with vampires, but I have hunted werewolves. I shot one once, but by the time I got to it, it had turned back into my neighbor's dog.

Lie-men. You must realize that Buddy did that solo in his end of days and back when you spent top coin on Memorex cassettes to capture quality audio and years before Al Gore invented the internet. All of the above stated highly qualified drummers save Neal P. were in Pampers when Buddy Rich died (Neal was probably in his early 20's). None of them can come close to doing what Buddy did in that above 'Impossible' video clip.

All good drummers, but Lie Nap is right. Not one of those guys has demonstrated Buddy's versatility.

I could listen to almost every Hendrix song twice in a row, the first time with attention on the guitar, the second on the drumming. The drumming was as awesome and innovative as the guitar work. Mitch Mitchell rocked.
This is a pretty funny video. Man, the 60s were goofy. But the drumming kicks.

Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa hall of fame. No doubt. But I'm talking about more modern funk/rock/metal drumming.
Keith Moon was brilliant, but more for overall style and presence. He's the reason I started playing drums (well, him and Peter Criss but it's easier to admit to the Moon influence). But could he have fit in with any other band? Same with Mitch Mitchell.
Steve Jordan is insanely great. Listen to this shit. He even makes John Mayer sound good.

For pure power and muscle, how about Mikkey Dee?

Denis Chambers. Volcanic.
Manu Katche (sp?). Innovative.
Jorge Rossy. Feel and technique.
Lars Ulrich. Instrumental.
Larry Mullen Jr. Honest.
Dave Weckl. Precise.

Omar Hakim, ladies and Gentlemen! He's played with Miles Davis, Sting, Bowie, and Dire Straits. Most of the drumming on Brothers in Arms is Omar.

with Sting...

Here's a less jazzy performance, but it's memorable for me because I was sitting on stage for the show.
I do have to say that Omar's a really fun and enthusiastic drummer to watch in person. We were 20 feet or less from Omar and he laughed and smiled while he played, he'd turn and watch us to see our reaction. Playing for the crowd instead of just playing to do the music.
