The fact that Gramps sees the world different from you is an opportunity for you to have a discussion, learn a viewpoint, and see the world a bit bigger. You don't have to take that opportunity, but it's there.

First, let me be clear, I have no problem with the vast majority of posters here. Never have. It's 4 ppl: the yellow hat, the navy aviator, the shrew fat doctor's wife and Spells. Other than that, it's cool.

I honestly think the above just crush this board and all for different but still similar reasons.

Essentially: they don't believe ppl should be able to disagree with their ideology without repercussion. The old "freedom of speech isn't freedom from consequences" line.

And that attitude is essentially opposed to any non-facile understanding of free speech.

And this is of course a lie on their behalf, because it is obvious if their ideology was punished when advocated for, they'd be the first (and historically did-ACLU) to push for actual freedom of speech.

So, you see, ppl like them have pushed for and achieved the incredible restrictions we now live with wrt speech and opinion.

It is because of ppl like them that the workplace is precarious for ppl with viewpoints that were mainstream less then 12 years ago.

It is ppl like them who are responsible for the uselessness of internet searches on any non-sanctioned subject and why twitter and facebook throttle any opposing views into de facto silence.

Of course, I also think they are boring and just parrot Facebook and the corporate press and entertainment mindset. And they're not very bright or even educated either.

IGx predates the political polarization in this country, and allows groups of people as diverse as conservative Republicans, moderate Republicans, and former Republicans to have friendly piss-taking about any number of subjects. Many people are known by real names and have met others over that time. People are generally friendly.

I get that it's possible to have actual beefs with people here, but with the shared history it's easy to tell someone their opinion is wrong while also generally rooting for them when something good or bad happens to them. We've had some exceptions, but they were very rare.

All that is to say, to the extent that somebody is actually beefing over FSF stuff, you may not be taking these posts in the spirit intended.

Spells is often wrong but rarely evil.
I have been actually upset only at 2 things... G$ being a total fraud and one guy, thankfully long gone who appeared to be an actual irrational anti-semite to an annoying degree. I've met a half-dozen posters, they were all great in person.

We used to have more like me on this board, and the arguments were a bit more balanced, and fun.

I've also met and shared meals with quite a few guys on this board. Trained a few in person. Some have even stayed with my family and competed with me. All of them have been delightful.

But, I've always enjoyed 'Spells doctrinaire liberalism and racial insecurity. The "doctor's wife" is a cool person too. I think everyone on Benny's list is well educated.
